A PAIR OF GEORGE III GILTWOOD OVAL MIRRORSATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM & JOHN LINNELL, CIRCA 1760The ribbon tied entwined palm frond frames incorporating 'C' scrolls and acanthus each 130cm high, 94cm wideThis pair of mirrors or 'pier glasses', of Roman medallion form, is conceived in the George II picturesque style and relates to a flower entwined example at Uppark, West Sussex. John Linnell designed a pier glass circa 1760 and such mirrors appear to be derived from that drawing (Illustrated in H. Hayward & P. Kirkham, William & John Linnell, vol. II, London, 1980, p.115. fig.220). A closely related white painted pier mirror was supplied to Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter for Burghley House, Lincolnshire; although no specific bill remains, Exeter is known to have employed Linnell during the 1760's. A related mirror was designed and supplied by the architect John Vardy (1718-1765) to the 1st Earl Spencer for the Palm Room, the Earl's mansion, St. James's London. It is very rare to find a pair of mirrors of this design, most commonly only single examples are found. The current examples are also of larger size and a more sophisticated model than many other recorded examples, incorporating additional ornament to the main palm fronds forming the frames. A related but single and smaller example was sold; Christie's, London, A Private Collection from Belgravia' 26th January 2011 (£15,000). Another related single example, also attributed to William and John Linnell was sold; Christie's, London, Property of the Late Lady de Trafford, 9th December 2010, Lot 58 (£34, 850).  Condition Report: Both with marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits to frames. Both mirror plates have age and could possibly be original. They bear the expected depletion, sparkle and spots of loss. The surfaces of both frames appear to have been sympathetically cleaned and refreshed at some point. The gilt surface to both mirrors with the expected wear and rubbing. Various old glued repairs to the carved extremities of both mirrors - please see additional images. Some old vacant screw holes to the backs from previous fixtures. The backboards have age but are later replacements. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.       Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 197

A GEORGE III FIGURED MAHOGANY SERPENTINE DRESSING COMMODEIN THE MANNER OF THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CIRCA 1770The top drawer fitted with a baize inset slide above a fitted drawer containing a central ratchet adjustable mirror flanked on each side by lidded divisions and compartments89cm high, 116cm wide, 58.3cm deepCondition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old splits and chips. Some old veneer and moulding repairs - see images. The baize surfaces to the interior of the fitter drawer are later replacements. They bear the expected wear, marks and some fading. All of the handles to the compartments of the fitted drawer are lacking their hoops.Handles and locks appear original. No key is present but all locks are open. Escutcheons are old replacements. They vary from one another and there are small amounts of filler used around them. Old repairs to feet - see images. Some evidence of old worm to backs of feet and underside. The three regular drawers with stuck down marbled paper (probably 19th century). This has the expected discolourations and some tears. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 283

A REGENCY EBONISED AND BRASS MOUNTED SOFA IN THE MANNER OF MARSH & TATHAM, CIRCA 182092cm high, 202cm wide, 79cm deep overallCondition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and useSome old chips and splits, wear and some old losses (some old losses disguised by the ebonised surface being refreshed previously.) Some splashes/ marks of black paint to a minor extent are visible to the metal mounts. The sofa is of solid structure overall. There is some movement to some joints that may require simple 'tightening'. There are old worm holes throughout the frame but this does not affect the structure or solidity (and could be disguised/ hidden from immediate detection during use with careful restoration. )Some fading to the upholstery, some other indentation and marks (see images) The tassles of the bolster cushions and buttons at the opposing ends have previously been pulled out of position and bear losses and fraying. All of the gilt areas are gilt brass/ metal. The mounts are secured with both small brass tacks and small screws, therefore one type is likely/ possibly a replacement. The upper section of one mount to the arm upright has a straight split through it and is secured at the join with a screw. It is possible that the small element at the top is a well matched replacement (see image) The seat rails all appear original, as does the central stretcher and the supporting corner brackets. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 305

A REGENCY GILTWOOD OVERMANTLE MIRROR IN CORINTHIAN STYLE, CIRCA 1820 101cm high, 128cm wideCondition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use.Minor old splits and chips, various old wear and some minor losses. Some areas of wear to the gilding (see additional images) Some areas of the gilding refreshed, particularly to the main frieze and sphere mounted pediment. These areas are quite bright but still retain signs of age.The mirror plate is a later replacement. It appears to be hand bevelled. The rear panels are possible later replacements and bear a yellow coloured wash that matches the surrounding areas of the frame. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. This is an attractive mirror of unusual size and unusual design to the frieze in particular. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 324

Y A GEORGE IV MAHOGANY DESK OR WRITING TABLEIN THE MANNER OF GILLOWS, CIRCA 1825Veneered to all sides, the front panel enclosing recesses and drawers, the frieze drawer with a writing slope and fittings125cm high, 110cm wide, 58cm deepSee Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Volume I, 2008, Plate 6, for the design of this writing table, first published in the Lancaster firm's General Sketch Book 1810 and then reproduced in A C Loudon's Cottage, Farm and Villa Furniture published in 1833.A drawing by Gillows for a closely related 'secretaire-cabinet' or desk from 1818 is held in the Westminster City Archives. Please note: the handles of this item are ivory and therefore this lot should be marked for CITES and may be subject to CITES regulations.Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and useSome old repairs, some minor old losses. Old splits and chips. Some additional indented marks. There is a partial dark ring mark to the top surface. Careful polishing by a restorer could likely improve the appearance of this. Some of the pigeon holes to the interior bear old ink inscriptions (see images) probably of 19th century date. The leather insets with marks, abrasions and some discoloration. The main central leather panel with some untidiness and losses at the edges and some lifting (see images) Some staining to drawers interiors including some old ink stains(see images) The main writing drawer with evidence of a split to the floor of the drawer. (see image)Some fairly straightforward attention appears likely to be required (by a restorer) to the fitting/ fixture of the sliding top above the writing surface and the section of timber above it. None are damaged or broken but may need simple adjustment/ re-fixing in order to operate entirely satisfactorily. The drawer handles to the interior all appear to match and be original. They are generally in fair original condition. They are ivory. Lacking keys but the lock is open. The lock appears original.
