GEORGIAN PERIOD, THE HON. EAST INDIA COMPANY CIVILIAN OFFICIAL'S FULL DRESS UNIFORM c.1822-1829, comprising a bicorne hat, coatee and knee length breeches, three very fine and rare items. The hat of stiffened black fabric is decorated at either end with blackened silver lace fringes, the front bears a single chevron of patterned gold lace 15mm in depth, with a small retaining gilt button at the point, open back, convex, bearing the HEIC Lion (12mm). The hat has the original waxed black linen lining. The coatee in navy blue cloth has a 'stand-up' collar (8.3cm) and double breasted 'cuirass' front in black velvet. The cuffs with a chevron front pattern are again in black velvet. The front, cuffs and skirt pocket areas are complete with single black cord 'lace' and gilt metal buttons, all are flat, open back and bear the HEIC Lion within an oval cartouches so can be dated therefore as no earlier than 1812, the large ones are 20mm and the small 15mm. The back mark on the large ones examined is 'Treble Gilt Standard Colour'. The complete white cloth and silk lining is quilted in areas. The light weight woollen knee length breeches with a 'fall-front' though undoubtedly of the period are not a true match to the hat and coatee, in that the pattern on all the buttons is different, being that of the (HEIC) Bengal Pilot Service. The Lion is placed on an heraldic 'red' shield and the whole on an heraldic 'gold' ground. The buttons are near flat open back, have a burnished rim and are again marked, 'Treble Gilt Standard Colour'. (three large, three small 20 & 14mm) . At the knee there are four small linen covered buttons, a linen tightening strap and provision for a button, now lacking, the gold lace chevron on the hat is dull otherwise in remarkably good condition, the coatee has some splitting to the velvet collar and some small mothed areas, the lining in good overall condition other than some slight staining, the breeches with poorly repaired small tears mainly in the crutch area, otherwise, again in good condition. (3) NOTE. A label states that this an HEIC' s marine officer's uniform, however known portraits of such officers indicate that their coatees bore gold lace decoration in varying degrees dependant on rank, also black velvet facings would not have worn well on the long sea voyages. There are sundry portraits of HEIC officials on embassies to the native princes accompanied by their military counterparts wearing uniforms such as the one described above.
