Lot 3212

Brocade silk dress. Ivory silk richly embroidered with brightly coloured floral sprays of stylised roses, lilies and bluebells. The bodice has been separated from the skirt. The short sleeved, boned bodice with white silk lining with lacing in the back, has been altered in several places. Cream fabric has been crudely inserted front and back (could be easily removed). The skirt is open sided and reinforced with a kind of buckram; it was originally lined in pink silk that has now deteriorated. It has also been altered and crudely re-hemmed. Amongst the linens in this collection are various hand written labels, one of which reads "Brocade dress worn in 17th century by Mrs Hugh Rogers". Ann Bishop married Hugh Rogers in 1746. Hugh Rogers bought the Penrose Estate in the mid 1700s. Assuming the label refers to this brocade dress, (17th century is a mistake and it should read 18th) it would make the dress early to mid 18th century. It has been much altered and probably would have consisted of an additional petticoat and longer sleeves. The fabric, although not exactly the same, nicely matches the brocade shoes in lot 3203 which bear a label dating them 1722. The floral silk has deteriorated in some places but generally the integrity of the frock is good.Provenance: The Penrose Estate, Porthleven, Cornwall. (See illustration)
