The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and the New, Newly translated out of the originall Tongues and with the former Translations diligently compared and revised by his Majesties speciall Command, Appointed to be read in Churches, London: Printed by John Field, 1658, engraved general title with view of London (torn to fore-edge with slight loss and paper skinned to final line of imprint affecting few words, minor cropping at head), letterpress New Testament title present, final leaf of Old Testament (2N5) with short tear and some paper skinning at gutter of 2N4 & 2N5, close-trimmed at head & fore-edge with some loss, some light toning & dust-soiling, front free blanks with signature J. Pilkington and related 18th century genealogical entries for the Pilkington family, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, early 18th century gilt decorated red morocco, without title label, light wear mostly to joints and extremities, 24mo in 12s (leaf size 11.1 x 6.1 cm) (Qty: 1)NOTESHerbert 662; Darlow & Moule 520, with the words Appointed ... on the general title and text ending on Zz12b. No Apocrypha. There are two distinct Bibles of 1658, which both bear J. Field's imprint. It is possible that, while one of these is really Field's production, the other is a foreign or pirated edition. But it is not easy to determine which is the 'genuine', and which the 'spurious' Bible. According to the BM Catalogue this is the 'genuine'; Fry and Lenox call it 'spurious', though Fry confesses that it is difficult to see why such an epithet should be applied to it or to the other 24mo Bible. Very incorrectly printed, e.g. John vii. 31, no miracles ; 2 Thess. ii. 15, Paul fast for stand fast (Herbert; Darlow & Moule).
