A pair of Louis XVI ormolu candlesticks, late 18th century with later elements, each socket cast as a basket of fruit above three adorsed putti herms, rising from acanthus leaves, on ribbon-tied waisted socles and circular, foliate cast bases with projecting plinths, 24cm high, (lacking drip pans, the fruit basket sockets possibly later associated). The stem sections of these candlesticks are the same as those of a pair of three branch candelabra in the Wallace Collection, (Inv. F128). The bases also bear definitive similarities. It is assumed that the candlesticks in this lot then would originally have had branches issuing, like the examples in the Wallace Collection, the later adapted fruit basket sockets lending weight to the theory.
