Dickens (Charles). The Works of Charles Dickens, Household Edition [cover-title], 99 of 101 original parts (lacking numbers 91 and 93), Chapman and Hall, 1871-1880, black & white engraved plates, black & white illustrations to text, occasional short closed page tears and edge fraying, some parts with generally light spotting (mainly to first and last leaves), frontispiece to part 11 detached with several tears to margins (one affecting plate by 5mm) and some minor edge losses and dust-soiling, three other frontispieces detached, two plates with a marginal tear, one plate detached and edge-frayed, 11 parts mostly or partly unopened, 14 parts unopened, original pale blue printed wrappers, most wrappers chipped (mainly to spine) and/or edge-frayed, some toned at edges, some wrappers spotted (generally lightly), 22 parts with one or both covers detached or nearly detached, parts 10 & 11 lacking front cover (textblock of former with no stitching), large slim 8vo (Qty: 99)Gimbel D66. For the Household Edition , the first published after Dickens 's death, Chapman & Hall commissioned new illustrations and included Forster's Life of Dickens as the final title. The Household Edition is scarce in monthly parts: the Gimbel Collection records only incomplete copies, the largest made up mainly of the American parts issue, and only three complete copies of the English parts appear in auction records. It appears that the earlier parts of this present copy were the most read, as they bear the most wear, many of the later parts being partly or completely unopened.
