George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), an original hand-written letter, dated 30th March 1928 on headed notepaper, from his home in Ayot St Lawrence, Welwyn, Hertfordshire, to Mr Murray Carrington (1885-1941, actor), reading 'That is not exactly what I contemplated. My fees are 5%, 7.5%, 10% and 15% respectively when the gross receipts per performance, averaged for the week, do not exceed £50, £100 and £300. My secretary will send you a printed memorandum from London, my stock having been exhausted. This is as much as a performance can reasonably bear. At any rate, if you pay more you put up the market (by paying an extra 5% which I shall naturally add to my own terms if I find that it is to be had for the asking). My position is that I must reserve Cardiff and the play for Mr Macdona [Charles Macdona, Irish actor, born 1860] if he contemplates a performance there. If he stops you I shall expect him to take on the job himself. But if he consents you will have to deal with me and pay my fees in full. You will have no further obligation to me. If you choose to give Mr Macdona an interest in the affair, that must be between yourself and him. I am the sole owner of the performing right; and he must come in on the managing side, with which I have nothing to do so long as my fees are paid. His hold on me is that as he tours with companies performing my plays exclusively, I must not let him down (to say nothing of letting myself down) by spoiling his business in any town on his circuit. Faithfully, G. Bernard Shaw'.Private collection.Central vertical fold, with some foxing spots to the paper. No tears or holes.

Dame Elisabeth Frink R.A. (British, 1930-1993)The Travellers and the Bear signed and dated 'Frink. 68.' (lower right)pencil, ink and watercolour56 x 76 cm. (22 x 29 7/8 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Waddington Galleries, London, where acquired byPrivate Collection, U.K.An acute receptor of a variety of cultural references - one need only think of her masterpiece, Paternoster, located in the vicinity of St. Paul's Cathedral, which sharply coalesces the iconography of the Good Shepherd and the history of the place as a cattle market - Frink is not new to this kind of artistic commentary on traditional wisdom. Commonly attributed to Aesophus, the moral of The Bear and the Travellers is that only misfortune tests true friendship. Shortly after having sworn eternal loyalty to his fellow traveller, a man abandons his companion at the sight of a frightening bear. Deserted, all that remains to the betrayed fellow is to pretend to be dead. The beast approaches, gets close to his ear to smell him, and then goes. Having escaped the danger, the unfaithful friend wittily asks 'what did it tell you?' and the man replies 'to choose my friends more carefully.'This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

AUSTRALIA. Victoria, 1837-1901. Gold sovereign, 1872/1 M. Melbourne. Shield; 2 over 1. In 1871 it was decided to open a second mint in Australia, this time in Melbourne, to service the increasing demand for gold coins. From now coins would bear the same design as the British sovereigns, identified by a mint mark in the lower section of the reverse of the coin. Dies of the new designs and bearing the date 1871 were prepared in London and left Southampton via boat on 30 September 1871. However, after transferring the package to the steamer Rangoon on 1 November, the boat hit a rock on the Southwest coast of Ceylon. Despite this terrible fate all passengers and a small number of packages were saved. The 1872/1 overdate is testament to the survival of at least one of the 1871 dies as local engraver Julius Hogarth was commissioned by the Melbourne mint to create the overdate die. An extremely rare variety with a captivating story and truly historical significance.Young head left, WW on truncation; date below, with 2 struck over 1; VICTORIA DEI GRATIA. / Crowned shield within wreath; mintmark M and national emblems below; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:. Dasent, George Webbe Popular Tales from the Norse. Author's corrected Proof Edinburgh: Edmonston and Douglas, 1859. Seemingly a final proof, with 3 autograph letters from the author probably all 3 to the publisher, Mr Douglas, (2 addressed Dear Sir, one referring to a conversation with Mr Edmonston, another about an edition of Aesop's Fables), with numerous authorial corrections, with 2 annotated proof pages of 'The Notice' and 1 proof page of another page loosely tipped in with the letters, page ix marked "For Press when the corrections and additions have been made, GWD, Dec. 10th", 2 autograph pages on blue paper of text to be inserted, with occasional passages scored through, numerous alterations, changes, additions and corrections, contemporary half morocco, lacks spine, covers detachedNote: Note: A fascinating insight into Dasent's writing methods and Victorian publishing history. The inserted manuscript leaves note "Nor let any pious Welchman be shocked if we venture to assert that Gellert that famous hound upon whose last resting place the traveller comes as he passes down the lovely vale of Gwywwant, is a mythical dog, and never snaffed the fresh breeze in the Forest of Snowdon, nor saved his master's child from ravening wolf. This too is a primeval story, told with many varieties. Sometimes the foe is a wolf, sometimes a bear, sometimes a snake. It too came from the East. It is found in Pilpays The Hitopadesa, in Pilpay's Fables, in the Arabic original of the Seven Wise masters - that famous collection of stories which illustrate a setup-dame's calumny, and in many medieval versions of those originals..."Provenance: James Mair, book dealer and antiquarian collector in Fife; then to vendor.
