Two Victorian silver graduated salvers,by Martin, Hall & Co, London 1876 and 1882,both of shaped circular form, with leafy scroll, shell and gadroon borders on three claw and ball feet, with presentation inscriptions,20.5 and 32.5cm diameter, 37oz (2)Both salvers bear presentation inscriptions to Professor H Macnaughton Jones, on the occasion of his leaving Cork in March 1883. Henry Macnaughton Jones (1844-1918) was a leading obstetrician. He was responsible for founding the Cork Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, as well as the Cork Maternity. He was professor of Midwifery at Queen`s College Cork before leaving for London in 1883. He subsequently became president of the British Gynaecological Society.
A Norwegian silver peg tankard,by Berendt Johansen Platt, Christiania between 1656 and 1671,of cylindrical form supported on three rampant lion ball feet headed by acanthus decoration, the tubular scroll handle with grotesque mask and beading terminating in an escutcheon, the hinged cover inset with a medal* surrounded by a chased band of foliage with rampant lion ball thumb piece, the front of the body finely chased with the finale of a bear hunt, one man on horseback, another on foot helping him with the kill with five dogs to assist, with the bear attacking a fallen victim, all within a border of grotesque and Moresque figures, masks, animals and foliage, gilt interior with six pegs, engraved with ÈCESBÉ to base,20.25cm high to top of finial, 45oz *The medal inset in the cover depicts Queen Sofia Amalia, the reverse depicting her husband, King Frederick III of Denmark. A continental, possibly German, cavalry officer?s sword, c 1730, curved blade 32½?, with back fuller and traces of etched devices and inscriptions (?Sol..eo.. g.. An...bini?, etc), brass hilt with cast double shell guard, turn down quillon, the shells bearing a bear in shield, into small basket guard with knucklebow, sidebars, twisted spacers, thumb loop, inverted onion shaped pommel, later copper wirebound grip. Japanese carved ivory okimono, Meiji period, depicting a man carrying an infant on his back, a child holding a toy aloft, bears signature that reads Masatomo, 17cm high The bear held by the child appears to have one arm slightly shorter than the other suggesting the end has been broken off, the man would have appear to have lost the lower portion of the axe handle and he may have held something originally in his right hand which is no longer there - ** General condition consistent with age
