Robyn Graham Knotty, 2023 Watercolour, acrylic and gesso on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About In paintings ranging from loose representations of nature to entirely abstract, Robyn Graham takes reference from everyday tapestries and the casual adornments of our immediate surroundings. Repetitive compositions bear comparison and act as an invitation to the viewer to reminisce on memories evoked by the physical furnishings or decorative textiles that were once present in their lives. Often overlooked and eventually disregarded the materials that created curtains, tablecloths and bedsheets were ever-present during conversations and relationships, are at the forefront of her work. Both her paintings and drawings a nostalgia for the security and comfort, that these embroidered surroundings once offered. The staging of this exhibition during (and beyond) the Edinburgh International Festival reflects the well documented and longstanding international interest in Peter Howson's work.See ''Peter Howson'' by Robert Heller page 90. Of Howson's ''Nijinsky'' the art critic Peter Jenkins wrote ''Nijinsky I see as an heroic figure: clumsy yet nimble, his macho prance is a dance of defiance; his leaden, booted feet may hold him down but his head is in the clouds, jaw jutting like a dancing bear, he is a noble beast made an object of derision. We may see something of the tragic predicament of the individual in the twilight of the gods''. Heller describes Howson's ''Nijinsky'' as ''vastly powerful''.
