Round the World Flight Presentation piece. A wood and plaster presentation piece in the Art Deco style, painted bronze. The piece (49cm high x 50cm wide, with a circular base 26cm in diameter) comprises a ring, representing the circumference of the earth, through which the Graf Zeppelin is flying from right to left; below are the waves, and in the background are skyscrapers. On the front of the ring is the inscription (reading from lower left) “USA † France † Germany † [Russia] † [Siberia † Japan † US of America”(sic); around the rim are mouldings, corresponding to the inscriptions, of the Eiffel tower, Cologne Cathedral, St Basils Cathedral, a Polar Bear, a Rising Sun and the Empire State Building. On the base is a plaque with the inscription “Presented to the Tidewater Oil Company by Dr Hugo Eckner in appreciation of assistance and cooperation during the Round the World flight of the Graf Zeppelin 1929”. Tide Water Oil supplied Veedol Oil for the “Graf Zeppelin” during the flight. There is some damage to the ring and signs of repair elsewhere. A fascinating reminder of a historic event. Together with a small framed photograph (25cm x 33cm) of Dr Eckner with the original, described as ‘a Bronze’, and giving details of the artist, William Noell.GC See Plate 3
