Lot 4114
John Glover (British, 1767-1849), John Glover Sketchbook No. 71, to include 47 mainly pencil and some grey wash sketches of cattle and landscapes in southern English locations, with some pages double-sided and others consisting of two or more individual sketches per page, initialled to inside of front cover and numbered 71, with full page size typically 19 x 12cm. Provenance: given to the vendor's father by the well-known dealer Cyril Fry and thence by descent. The notebook originally consisted of 105 sketches. The missing pages were removed before the sketchbook came into the possession of the vendor's father. Condition Report: The sketchbook bears some wear and damage. The boards are frayed and worn. The sketches bear some foxing and spotting, as well as some wear to the corners, but the images themselves are generally in good condition and in tact. All pages are loose.

Photographs of a number of the key defendents in this trial at Nuremberg, 1947, essentially for those in the SS who conducted the administration of the Holocaust (SS Main Economic and Administrative Office), Pohl was found guilty and hanged, others were given prison sentences. Photographs are Pohl (2 copies), Frank (2 copies), Loerner, Vogt (3 copies), Pook, Baier, Hohberg & Volk. Selection of books relating to Sino-Japanese hostilities in the 1930's, the first book is an official album of photographs that appears to bear the emblems of the Japanese Naval Landing Forces on the cover, the photographs, captioned in Japanese and annotated very neatly in English, cover operations around Shanghai in 1932, the next book is titled 'Shanghai of Today' and contains photographs of the public buildings in that city, it has an annotation to the inside cover dated 1934, the next book is titled 'Five Months of War, the hostilities between Japan and China in narrative and picture' printed in 1938, the last book is titled 'Shanghai Defence Forces Souvenir and contains photographs and details of the British and International Military and Naval Forces involved in the defence of Shanghai in 1927, there are some very interesting photographs including that of pipers of the Shanghai Scottish, it has the name ' Major Sutor' written to the top and it is possible the group of books belonged to a British army officer involved in operations in China, (4)

Ivy and Brumas - A Dean’s Rag Book Co Polar Bear and her cub 1950s, with white mohair, brown and black plastic eyes, black plastic nose, stitched mouth and claws and printed label on underside —16 1/2in. (42cm.) high and Brumas with white wool plush, orange and black glass eyes, black stitched nose and mouth, felt pads and label in back seam (slight wear) - Ivy and Brumas were polar bears at London Zoo. Brumas was born 27 November 1949 and Ivy was her mother. Ivy had come to London from Hanover Zoo in 1947, and was about twelve years old when she gave birth. Brumas was named after her keepers Bruce and Sam (whose name was reversed). Although Brumas was female, the press reported that the bear was a he so the public thought that the cub was male, a belief that is still widespread. Brumas was the first baby polar bear to be successfully reared in Britain and was an immediate attraction with the public. She caused such interest that, in 1950, the Zoo's annual attendance figures reached the 3 million mark. Brumas died on 17 May 1958.
