Finch’s Pure Bears Grease, 56 Bishopsgate St Without, 72mm, restored * Reported in the Examiner, published in London on December 17th 1837: Pure Bear’s Grease. One of the greatest curiosities that is to be exhibited this Christmas in the metropolis will be at Finch’s 56 Bishopsgate Without, where one of the fattest bears now in England will be killed for the benefit of its Rich Grease which may be had at 1s per ounce or four ounces for 3s6d. Observe 56 Bishopsgate Without, corner of Artillery Lane. Another arrival of two fine young Bears. Recorded at the same address in Robson’s Street Directory of 1842: Finch Wm hairdresser and in an 1843 Commercial Directory: Finch Wm Golding bear importer. The fine potting of this lid and light transfer from the engraved printing plate are indicative of very early dates of manufacture consistent with these directory entries and newspaper report.
