Indian Company School (early 19th Century) Views of notable Delhi buildings, including The Palace of the Qudsia Bagh on the bank of the River Yamuna, The Fort and Palace, Interior of Palace at Delhi Fort, The Qutb Minar, The Nili Chhatri or Blue Tomb, and Sketches of buildings around Delhi one inscribed below image under mount, one with a list of titles stuck to verso reputedly by Lt. Col. Cortlandt Angelo watercolour with pen, ink and wash on paper (6) 9 x 13cm (4 x 5in) Other Notes: These six views of Delhi monuments appear to be closely related to the famous set of "Sixty drawings of Mughal monuments and architectural details" executed circa 1836. This set of six drawings is recorded to have been painted by the draughtsmen of the Delhi School in the the Office of the Honourable East India Company's Superintendent of Public Buildings and Ancient Monuments at Calcutta. A number of examples from this set are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. These drawings bear striking resemblance to those that were commissioned and collected by Sir Thomas Metcalfe, circa 1840, for his famous album, "Reminiscences of Imperial Delhi" - also known as "The Delhi Book" which contains approximately 130 drawings by Mughal artists. Like the aforementioned two sets, the importance of the present views lies in the fact that they capture the notable monuments of the city before the Siege of Delhi of 1857. All rather dirty with some foxing and certain level of discoloration.
