An historic 9ct gold spitfire brooch, realistically formed with RAF enamel marking, engraved to the reverse BCC, Spitfires. 3cm long with a similar base metal example, in fitted case marked BCC, Spitfire Fund 1940. Early in World War II Lord Beaverbrook originated the idea of the presentation aircraft. An individual, organisation or town could present the cost of an airframe for a Spitfire (approximately £5,000) and an aircraft would be allocated to bear the name of the donor.
