An early 19th century plated copper double coaster in the form of a Royal Navy ‘Jollyboat', with the Brisbane serpent and stork crest and motto ‘DABIT OTTA DEUS', with recesses for two bottles and two stoppers, on four brass and leather coasters, 6cm high, 32.5cm wide, (some wear to the plate) The crest is that of the Brisbane family from Scotland. The coaster could have belonged to the Major General Sir Thomas Brisbane (1773-1860) sometime Governor of New South Wales, or perhaps more likely to one of his brothers: Rear-Admiral Sir Charles Brisbane (1769-1829) or Commodore Sir James Brisbane (1774-1826). Sir Thomas Brisbane was acclaimed in 1835 as a general and as a contributor to the advance if astronomy. A river and city in Australia now bear his name. He adopted the additional name of Makdougall on marrying in 1819 the daughter of a Scottish baronet. Rear-Admiral Sir Charles Brisbane served under Captain Nelson and Lord Hood, was governor of St. Vincent from 1808-1829. Commodore Sir James Brisbane was Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Navy in the East Indies.
