Printed for the first time in Naples in 1725, the Scienza Nuova, was corrected, expanded and reprinted in 1730, but since 1736 the author began the drafting of a new edition - the present one- which includes corrections, comments and notes that they bear witness to Vico's uninterrupted study on the work until the last night of his life, which took place in January 1744. In the Scienza Nuova, Vico develops a system in which history is characterized by the continuous and incessant repetition of three distinct cycles: 'the divine age', during which man expresses himself through symbols, 'the heroic age', in which the unconscious and myth prevail, and 'the human age', marked by the rise of concepts . "The New Science" [is] the vehicle by which the concept of historical development at the thought of Western Europe "(Printing and the Mind of Man, 184) . Brunet V, 1176; Graesse VI, 298
