AN ITALIAN SARDONYX CAMEO OF OMPHALE, PROBABLY ROMAN CIRCA 1810-20 carved in relief through the brown band of the floral headband and the attribute of Hercules' Nemean lion on her shoulder to the white of the young woman's dexter profile, hair and draped shoulders against the almost black oval base, 38 x 28mm, perhaps later set in an unmarked gold brooch mount with a band of pearls between a corded border and a scalloped milled rim, 49 x 37mm Provenance: The Estate of Mrs Harriet Bull Pitman (nee Brown, 1922-2019), of the 'Brown-Goodwin' House in Marblehead Old Town, Massachusetts. The house was purchased in 1832 by William Peach Brown (1780-1838), son of Captain John Brown, a privateer during the American Revolution. It remained in the Brown family for six succeeding generations. Omphale, a Lydian queen, became the wife of Hercules. Following advice from the oracle at Delphi, the hero was enslaved in recompense for the slaying of Iphitos; purchased by Omphale, his strength and beauty resulted in their marriage upon his release. The hairstyle with floral headband and strongly Neo-classical profile of this cameo bear close affinities with the 'Ideal Head' of Antonio Canova (1757-1822), presented by the sculptor to the Duke of Wellington, which arrived in England in 1818. One of four 'Ideal Heads' epitomising female beauty, the bust at Apsley House also resembles the head and hairstyle of Canova's 'Dancer', commissioned by Josephine Bonaparte and now at the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. The quality of carving displayed by the present cameo was undoubtedly carried out by a master of the glyptic arts; for comparisons with signed works by Nicolo Morelli (1771-1838), renowned for his work for Napoleon and the Bonaparte family, see Bonhams, London, 12 Nov 2020, lot 12, similarly brooch-set with pearls. Also see for another, similarly mounted, Sotheby's, 20 March 2018, lot 182, and one of Bacchus, Bonhams, London, 25 April 2012, lot 21. For an unsigned cameo, attributed to Morelli, see Sotheby's, London, 9 July 2020, lot 64. The Roman studio of Morelli were not alone in producing high quality cameos however; for the work of Giuseppe Girometti (1780-1851) see the British Museum, No. 1978,1002.249, or for that of Angelo Angelo Amastini (1754-1815) see Lempertz, Cologne, 17 November 2016, lot 35.

Geldschüttelbaum, Yao-quian-shu, China, östliche Han-Dynastie, 25 bis 220 n. Chr. Originale Patina. Höhe ca. 135 cm. Provenienz: Deutsche Privatsammlung, angeblich auf E.A. Voretzsch zurückgehend, der 1924 über Bronzen publizierte. Für eine eingehende Erörterung dieser Geldbäume siehe “Orientations“, September 1997, S. 67-84.Zustand: II -A Chinese money-shaking tree, yao qian shu, Eastern Han Dynasty, 25 to 220 A.D. Greenish patinated bronze, intricately worked in places, and glazed ceramic. A rider on a ram adorns the conical base with green lead glaze. The trunk is composed of solar rings with finely flamed coronae, each encircling a small bear. The trunk extending into four rows of delicate branches with animals, mythical creatures and coins, the tip similarly structured. Although the coins in the branches gave rise to the name of the "money-shaking tree", their primary purpose is not to ensure the prosperity of the dead in the afterlife, but to serve as an offering to the gods. Taoist mythology is represented in these trees by Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West in her paradise. Money-shaking trees are extremely rare and known to derive only from South West China.A thermoluminescence expertise prepared by the Kotalla laboratory in 2000 confirms the date. Height approx. 135 cm.Provenance: German private collection, supposedly going back to E.A. Voretzsch, who published on bronzes in 1924. For an in-depth discussion of these money trees, see "Orientations", September 1997, pp. 67-84.Condition: II -

A GOLD BRACELET, BY GERMANO ALFONSI, CIRCA 1960Composed of five panels, each cast in high relief depicting the legend of Achilles, with T-bar and loop clasp, in 18K gold, each panel signed, length 19cmA similar bracelet sold at Sotheby's on March 2019, lot 83, for 11,250 EurosNino D'Antonio Germano was born to the Alfonsi family of jewellers in Rome in 1926. He was predominantly a sculptor, working in bronze through the use of the lost wax process. He carried this technique over to his jewellery making, bringing a sculptural element to his work. As the lost wax method causes the mould to degrade, Germano's designs could only be a carried out a finite number of times, making each piece one of a very limited edition. He worked in 18k gold and would sign his work 'Germano'.Germano's main inspiration was drawn from classical art and many of his pieces carry mythological themes. Furthermore, the gold is acid washed to create a soft hue, delicately mimicking the jewellery found on archaeological sites. A perfect example of this is the current lot which artfully depicts the tale of Achilles. Set against a plain background, the figures bear a striking resemblance to those found on Greek and Roman friezes, the muscular forms paying tribute to the perfection of the human physique and the immortal lineage of Achilles. Achilles' victories are juxtaposed with his demise, the two end plaques depicting Paris with his bow and a defeated Achilles with an arrow in his heel.Condition Report: Normal signs of wear, overall in good conditionSignatures located on each panel at the frontTotal gross weight approx. 71.13g
