‡ A 20 BORE SPANISH FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL BY DIEGO ESQUIBEL, MADRID, DATED 1704 AND 1706 with tapering barrel formed in three stages, moulded at the muzzle and girdle, the median polygonal and engraved with alternate panels of foliage and small central diamond-shaped panels, signed and dated octagonal breech engraved with scrollwork and struck with the maker's gold-lined punzónes, scroll-engraved tang, signed and dated lock with a single gold-lined punzón, engraved with scrolling foliage on the tail, full stock carved with a moulding behind the rear ramrod-pipe and about the tang, iron mounts comprising finely pierced and chiselled side-plate decorated with scrolling foliage inhabited by serpents, spurred pommel engraved with border ornament and with a warrior profile on the cap, engraved trigger-guard with foliate terminal (engraving worn), a pair of moulded ramrod-pipes and later ramrod 31.4 cm; 12 1/8 in barrel Diego Esquibel is recorded manufacturing firearms around 1694. He enjoyed an outstanding reputation in Spain and his reputation outside that country is evident by the number of German forgeries of Spanish barrels that bear his name. See Lavin 1965, p. 259.
