MILNE A.A: (1882-1956) British Author. Alan Alexander Milne. Best known for his books about “Teddy Bear Winnie-the-Pooh”. An excellent set of two good and contrasting A.Ls.S., by Milne. The first being an A.L.S., `A.A.Milne´, one page, small 8vo, London, 2nd July 1920, on his personal printed stationery “11, Mallord Street, Chelsea S.W.3, Tel. Kensington 2074”, to Vincent Seligman. Milne refers in part to his wife´s pregnancy, stating `I´m afraid that my wife won´t be able to go out now until after September..´. Christopher Robin was born a month later on 21st August 1920. The second letter being an A.L.S., `Blue´, signed in Milne´s nickname, two pages, 8vo, Hartfield, 27th November 1942, to Vincent Seligman. Bearing to the heading his handwritten initials `C.F - H.S´, which correspond to the acronym for Cotchford Farm, Hartfield, Sussex. This letter is written to same correspondent but twenty two years later. Milne notes that `Moon´, his nickname for Christopher Robin is now stationed at a training battalion for the Royal Engineers, and then quotes his son in his last received letter from Christopher Robin `Scorpions or no scorpions this is a very pleasant place. We might be much worse off.´ Milne, who was Captain of the British Home Guard in WWII, makes several references to the war, including the comment `Do you realize we are winning..´ Cotchford Farm was the creative birthplace of Milne´s wonderful stories about his young son Christopher Robin and Winnie The Pooh. Small overall creasing with upper edge slightly trimmed, otherwise G £1500-2000

An original Teddy puppet from BBC Children’s television show ‘Andy Pandy’, by Chad Valley early 1950s, fine quality tan mohair bear with orange glass eyes, vertically stitched nose with top stitch and stitched mouth, with specially built metal hoops to shoulders, hips and neck for string attachment, wearing a white and red polka-dot bow tie, HMS sailor hat and brown rucksack, (condition: generally excellent), 9” (23cm) tall, also with a Della Porta’s Ltd paper bag containing red and green polka-dot ribbons. Together with card box with pencil ‘ANDY PANDY’ TEDDY and pen LiTTLE ‘TED’ BBC. T.V to lid, felt tip ‘ANDY PANDY’S TEDDY.!. TO LID EDGE, back of box address to Miss Vida F Baxter, 139 Union Street Aberdeen, Scotland and Sender. M.Bird, Chartwell Cottage, Westerham, Kent, stamps and frank mark for Westerham. It is believed that this is the first Teddy made for the Listen with Mother Andy Pandy television series created by Frieda Angstrom and Maria Bird who formed Westerham Arts Ltd, named after the village where they lived in Kent, also home to the craftsman who originally sculpted their Andy Pandy puppet. Unlike Little Ted auctioned at Bonhams in 2009 and the example at the Museum of London this Teddy is not weighted something that helped the puppeteers operate the later examples, thus we believe this is the first of the three made for the television series. The Sailors hat and rucksack where probably used in the episode ‘Boats’ aired on the 26th September 1950.
