RAMÓN MARTÍ ALSINA (Barcelona, 1826 - 1894)."Female nude".Oil on canvas. Relined.Signed in the lower left corner.Period frame, with some faults in the stucco and polychromy.Measurements: 175 x 80 cm; 213 x 118 cm (frame).Seated on cushions upholstered in silk and trimmings, a woman of cimbreantes hips and turgid flesh tones acquires a sculptural presence, being outlined in front of a dark bottom. She adopts a modest gesture that accentuates her attractiveness. She tilts her head to one side and her black eyes give off a melancholic glow. The nude seems to be based on baroque models, but Martí Alsina counterbalances the carnal charge with an intimate, modern touch. The silky qualities of the hair, the luminous modelling of the forms, the soft cushions, etc. bear the mark of a master.Considered today as the most important figure of Spanish realism, Martí Alsina was part of the European avant-garde of the time. He revolutionised the Spanish artistic panorama of the 19th century, was a pioneer of the study of life and the creator of the modern Catalan school, as well as the master of a whole generation, with disciples of the importance of Vayreda, Urgell and Torrescassana. He began his studies in philosophy and literature, alternating them with evening classes at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts until 1848. After completing this first apprenticeship and deciding to take up painting, he took his first steps in the Maresme region, where he began to earn his living by painting portraits in a naturalistic style and landscapes "à plen air". In 1852 he became a teacher of line drawing at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona, and two years later he began to teach figure drawing, a post he held until the accession of Amadeo of Savoy to the throne. In 1853 he travelled to Paris, where he visited the Louvre and became familiar with the work of Horace Vernet, Eugène Delacroix and French Romanticism. Later he became acquainted with the work of Gustave Courbet, the greatest exponent of realism. In 1859 he was appointed a corresponding member of the Sant Jordi Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona. His first important exhibition was the General Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona in 1851. From then on he exhibited regularly in Barcelona, Madrid and Paris, and was invited to the Universal Exhibition in the French capital in 1889. His prizes included medals at the National Exhibitions in Madrid, third in 1858 for his work Last Day of Numancia and second in 1860 for his landscape. In his last years he lived in seclusion, focusing his efforts on the search for new forms of expression, with an undone brushstroke close to Impressionism. His themes include numerous landscapes and seascapes, urban views (especially of Barcelona), portraits and human figures, genre scenes, temperamental female nudes, history painting and biblical scenes. He rarely devoted himself to still lifes, although he also painted some still lifes. Works by Martí Alsina are kept in the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of the Abbey of Montserrat and the Museum of l'Empordà in Figueras.

Exceptionnel squelette tridimensionnel d'ichthyosaure francais Exceptional French 3-Dimensional Ichthyosaur SkeletonStenopterygius longifrons (Owen, 1881) Lower Jurassic (Toarcian, 182-174 Ma)Lorraine, FranceIchthyosaurs are iconic marine reptiles of the Mesozoic. Their discovery in England at the beginning of the 19th century and their study by the greatest names of the natural sciences (Blainville, Owen, Cuvier ...) have contributed to the conceptual revolution of Earth's history. The newspapers of that time and the novels of Jules Verne helped to promote the ichthyosaurs to the rank of antediluvian monsters, fierce fighters in an infernal world. They have become underwater stars, equal to their terrestrial dinosaur counterparts. Since the end of the 19th century, discoveries multiplied. Today, most of the major natural history museums have at least one ichthyosaur fossil.Just as dolphins descended from land mammals that adapted to live in the sea, the ancestors of ichthyosaurs were reptiles that lived on land. The limbs of ichthyosaurs are characterized by a considerable reduction in the size of the long bones and a very high number of phalanges. The result is a highly flexible fin. The fins of dolphins have the same adaptations. Many details of ichthyosaur anatomy reveal their extensive adaptation to aquatic life. Most fast-swimming animals have a fusiform body shape, with a tail that serves as a means of propulsion, while the fins serve to manage direction. Thus ichthyosaurs, dolphins, and sharks are not related to each other, but all have similar morphologies. The teeth of ichthyosaurs regrew throughout their life. Larger species had stubby conical teeth intended for crushing bones, while smaller ichthyosaurs had thin teeth organized into combs to capture small and agile prey.Scars bear witness to the brutal life of the ichthyosaurs. They confronted other large marine reptiles such as plesiosaurs and pleiosaurs, and the largest species even turned out to be cannibalistic. As it was impossible for Ichthyosaur to come on land to give birth, they developed viviparous adaptation and gave live birth in water. As with current dolphins, the tail of the babies came out first to prevent the young from drowning during childbirth. As soon as a baby was released, we can assume that its mother pushed it to the surface to help it take its first breath. The species of Stenopterygius had a small skull and narrow flippers. Its skull was extended into a beak and was armed with an array of large sharp teeth. The limbs are perfect fin-like structures. The tail terminated in a large, semicircular, leathery, vertical caudal fin and even a triangular dorsal fin was present. This species of Ichthyosaur, in particular, has not been studied in depth and there is very little literature on it. Therefore, the present offering represents a unique and interesting opportunity for a museum or private collector to conduct further scientific research. The present specimen is exceptional and unique for its three-dimensional, sculptural mounting on a custom-fitted brass stand (laiton). The geological formation containing Toarcian fossils in which it was discovered was found in France. The specimen was discovered and excavated in the early 2000s during construction on the high-speed TGV line in Eastern France. This formation is of the same age as in Holzmaden, Germany but the bones are less compressed. Ichthyosaurs from Holzmaden are traditionally prepared two-dimensionally on a slab. Extraordinary skill and precision not only enabled the tedious extraction of the fossilized bones one by one from its matrix, but also made it possible to rebuild the skeleton in 3D. Only a handful of ichthyosaurs have ever been reconstructed this way. This individual specimen represents more than two years of work by a specialist. The skull of the specimen shows a wonderful preservation, only few teeth and the sclerotic ring have been restored. The shoulder grindle is complete and carries the forelimbs composed of original humeri, radius, ulna, metacarpals and 65% of original phalanges. Of the pelvic bones, pubis and ischium are original, and the hind limbs are 100% complete.Overall, this makes this skeleton extremely complete with a total of more than 80% original bones. It is the first time that a complete specimen like this, found in France, will be up for auction. Refer to department for Lot Estimates. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Grande ammolite iridescente du Canada High-quality Large Iridescent Ammonite from CanadaPlacenticeras meekiLate Cretaceous, Bearpaw formation, (75-72 Ma)Alberta, Canada'Ammolite' is the name given to the colorful and wonderful Ammonite fossils found in the famous Bear Paw Formation in Southern Alberta, Canada. Their shells underwent a unique fossilization process over 75 million years. Exposure to pressure, temperature and geographic location caused the shell to mineralize into a rainbow of iridescent colors similar to opalization. The specimens are mined on the Native American Black Foot reservation, who themselves operate and oversee the excavation and production. Since 1981 Ammolite is recognized as a gemstone by the CIBJO Colored Stones Commission. The featured specimens are some of the best preserved and most complete in the world, showing a wide range of the most vivid and rare colorizations. This particular specimen shows a matt coating which is not seen on this fossil. This gives a perfect idea of the real color of the gem that cover the entire specimen on both sides.
