Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Mountain Man Rendezvous" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Illustration Board painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared in the Fleetwood Trails West Collection of Fine Art Prints as "Mountain Man Rendezvous" published in 1983. Of all the pioneers who helped open the West for peaceful settlement, the famed "mountain men" bear a special place of honor in history. Like the hunters, traders, scouts and Indian fighters, they blazed their mark on the vast frontier ... but these hardy adventurers did even more. For it was the mountaineers who struggled to find usable paths through the vast, rugged expanses of the Rockies and the Sierras, and adjoining lands ... who discovered and explored the rich, green valleys and watering places of the forbidding western wilderness ... who, by doing so, made the West accessible to the thousands of settlers who followed. The hardy mountain men crisscrossed the West, scouring the entire countryside for bears, otters, and -- above all-- the beaver, which was larger and fatter, and had thicker fur than any other fur-bearing animal they had seen previously. With the founding of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company by William Ashley and Andrew Henry in 1822 came a revolutionary approach to the problem of collecting the furs trapped by these mountain men. Ashley, instead of scattering fur trading posts over the entire West, established an annual "Rendezvous" where hundreds of trappers could flock together to drink whiskey, run races, socialize and, of course, exchange their valuable beaver pelts for money and goods. Lot 155

Don Balke (B. 1933) "Bear Cubs" Signed middle left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Smokey Bear stamp issued August 13, 1984. Once numerous, Black Bears are able to survive, even though civilization relentlessly encroaches on their territory. Smaller and less ferocious-looking than Grizzlies, Black Bears will occasionally approach humans but are capable of becoming violently aggressive. Omnivorous, but primarily vegetarians, Black Bears eat berries, succulent roots, acorns, and beech nuts, but they also enjoy fresh meat, and kill or scavenge when the opportunity arises. Their energy-rich diet insulates Black Bears for their hibernation. From October to May, they sleep in caves or hollow logs. During hibernation, mature females may give birth to cubs, usually twins, born in mid-winter. The young cubs huddle against their mothers, nursing until spring brings good weather and their first chance to discover the world outside the den. Female Black Bears are ever-watchful mothers, taking a full year to give their cubs hunting and foraging lessons while vigorously protecting them. As they mature, Black Bears become loners, using their intelligence and secretive natures to survive in their dwindling habitat. Image Size: 11.25 x 11.25 in. Overall Size: 20 x 20 in. Unframed. Morton Kunstler (American, B. 1931) "Chief Joseph Surrenders" Signed and dated lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. From the first landings at Jamestown and Plymouth, Americans had been at war with the Indians. One of the most tragic chapters in this perpetual warfare was the expulsion of the Nez Perce (the Pierced Noses) from their ancestral lands in Idaho. These Indians had welcomed Lewis and Clark as early as 1804, and later on American missionaries. But when settlers of the 1870s invaded the Nez Perce lands looking for gold, and the U.S. Government attempted to drive the Nez Perce out of their reservation, they fought back under the leadership of the remarkable Chief Joseph. The Nez Perce fought in vain. Hoping to find refuge in Canada, Chief Joseph led his tribe on a trek of nearly two thousand miles through the Rockies. Thirty miles from his goal, General Nelson Niles caught up with him in the Bear Paw Mountains. Vastly outnumbered, Chief Joseph fought bravely but was forced to surrender against overwhelming odds. Exiled to Oklahoma, his farewell speech to his people is one of the most moving in the history of American eloquence: I am tired. Our chiefs are killed ... The old men are all dead. It is the young men now who say "yes" or "no." ... It is cold and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run ... away to the hills and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are. I want to have time to look for my children and see how many of them I can find ... My heart is sick and sad. I am tired." Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18.25 x 20 in. Unframed. (B10501)

Lot 372

Dean Ellis (American, 1920 - 2009) "Manatee" Signed lower right. Oil on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. It seems incredible that sailors once mistook manatees for mermaids. These sea mammals bear little resemblance to beautiful women. Not only are manatees ugly, in an endearing sort of way, but they grow much larger than people. Some attain lengths of 13 feet and weigh nearly 2,000 pounds. There are three species of manatee. Caribbean Manatees are found in Florida, the waters of the Caribbean, southern Mexico and northern Brazil. West African Manatees frequent the rivers of tropical West Africa. And Amazonian Manatees inhabit rivers of the Amazon and Orinoco drainages. All three species face extinction. Unfortunately, these lovable and docile "sea cows" provide easy prey for hunters in search of meat, hides and oil. Power boats take their toll as well. Dozens of manatees are injured and killed each year by propellers. Scientists believe manatees descended from the same ancestor as the elephants. Like elephants, manatees exist exclusively on vegetation -- the only aquatic mammals to do so. They spend much of their day browsing in shallow water on sea grasses, algae and water weeds. Every 24 hours an individual manatee consumes one pound of food for every 10 pounds of its body weight. A man weighing 160 pounds would have to eat 16 pounds of salad to match a manatee's appetite. Image Size: 14.25 x 20 in. Overall Size: 24 x 24 in. Unframed. (B12285)

Highly similar studies that lack these numbers and inscriptions can be closely compared with other examples in the British Museum's collection, such as 'Design for a monument - a mural tablet with figures of Science, to left, and Genius' [acc. no. 1888,0503.36], and 'Venus in her sea chariot, attended by Tritons and a Nereid, with a pedestal' [acc. no. 1900,0824.197]. The drawing 'Michael Seizing the Rebel Angels', also held in the British Museum [1888,0503.94], would appear to be on the same stock of Whatman paper as many in the present album. ‘This is indeed the greatest innovation of all if true’  FRANKLIN JOHN: (1786-1847) British Rear-Admiral and Arctic Explorer. Franklin was present at the Battle of Copenhagen (1801) and served on board HMS Bellerophon at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805). A very fine A.L., unsigned and incomplete, four pages (closely written text), 4to, H.M.S. Rainbow, Corfu, 12th September 1830, to 'My dear Children'. Franklin states that he had intended to reply to their letter of 30th May earlier, but was occupied in writing letters of business, praises their interest in the history books they have been reading, and recounts his friend, Captain Beaufort's, judgement of the Turks, which he believes to be very correct, 'In the Turkish character there is a striking contrast of good and bad qualities: though insatiably avaricious a Turk is always hospitable, and frequently generous…..the needy traveller is sure of receiving refreshment and sometimes even the honour of sharing his pipe: his religion binds him to supply his greatest enemy with bread and water; and on the public roads numerous khans where gratuitous lodging is given and fountains or cisterns for the benefit of thirsty travellers and their cattle have been constructed…..In this point of view the character of the modern Greeks would ill bear a comparison with that of their oppressors', also adding that Beaufort wrote of some Turks in a remote village, 'Though sufficiently shrewd in the sale of their cattle and fruit, they appeared to be very simple and ignorant, yet it was pleasing to observe these poor creatures with a manly independence that would do honour to more enlightened minds, kneel down on the sand at the appointed hour of prayer, and go through their prayers & prostrations without appearing to be in the least embarrassed by…..so many strangers'. Franklin further comments of his own experiences, 'The Turks you know are Fatalists as to religion and therefore believe everything must happen as it has been ordered by the First Great Creator and in consequence consider it useless to make any effort to avert evil or insure good…..even this day I witnessed an instance of similar indifference to awful events when I called on the principal Aidecamp of the Grand Vizir who is at present here. We having heard a few days ago that the Fort of Scutari which the Grand Vizir's Army has been attacking was thrown down by lightning & 600 persons killed under its ruins - I asked him whether the information was correct, he merely answered that he had heard of it, but did not know the extent of the injury and made no further comment - but passed on to some other subject of trifling importance…..his indifference arose solely from the habit of attributing everything to Fate…..We often see individual Turks here and have recently had a Turkish ship of war with a Seraskeen or Admiral on board who with his squadron have been for some time cooperating with the Army of the Grand Vizir in reducing the rebellious Chiefs of Albania, Thessaly & Epirus to subjection, indeed some of these subjects are yet within view on the opposite shores and they occasionally open fire on the inhabitants of the different Towns along the coast', continuing 'You are aware the present Sultan is a great reformist - he has introduced the European manner of exercise & fighting among his troops and…..has also caused their dress to be changed - so that now instead of the graceful Turban & flowing robe which distinguished the Turkish soldier, you see his soldiers & sailors attired in military jackets like our men…..It has even been reported that he has so far overcome old prejudices as to have taken his favourite Sultana & her daughter to some evening party……This is indeed the greatest innovation of all if true for you must have heard that the Turkish women are kept enclosed in their houses or walled gardens not to be seen by men except they be closely veiled' and also reports of his immediate surroundings, 'The Ionian Islands contain among their inhabitants people from nearly all the neighbouring countries and therefore you may imagine that there is a great variety of dresses to be seen…..They were originally Venetians and……afterwards became a Greek Colony & then Venetian and subsequently have been under the rule of Russia and France and last of all under the protection of England……All of them are very picturesque and now that good roads have been formed in them they form pleasant places of residences except for the Summer months when either the excessive heat or Malaria they become often unhealthy. This year has been an exception and there have been few cases of Fever. I have only visited Corfu & Zante. Willy who tells me he likes raisins notwithstanding the manner in which they are messed by the women & children in preparing them, would be quite delighted with the currants of Zante, the growth of which is their principal cultivation……Olives and the oil extracted from them are the principal articles of trade in Corfu - but these are grapes grown in abundance and some tobacco…..Corfu is only separated from the opposite Coast of Albania by a channel of 6 or 7 miles in width but we cannot have any intercourse with that shore for fear of being put into Quarantine…..for these places being frequented by people that come & go direct to & from Constantinople and other places where the plague is very frequent the people here are afraid of that pestilence being introduced into these Islands. If we were not in this way prevented I should have enjoyed making a Tour on the Albanian shore…..to see that parts where that Monster Ali Pacha committed his dreadful atrocities…..He was a very cruel bad man and richly deserved the death he afterwards met'. The final part of Franklin's letter, as it exists here, continues 'I think Willy has been misinformed about fine shells being procured at Malta….however….I am delighted to find he turns his attention to this or any subject of Natural History. Your Aunt has not yet joined me - she is at present making a Tour in Spain….She is looking forward to the pleasure of visiting many parts of the Mediterranean during my stay such as Greece - Athens, Alexandria, Smyrna and perhaps Constantinople which are not easy to be got at by Ladies and I sincerely hope the opportunity will be afforded her…..I will ask her to write to you occasionally when she has joined me which I think she will have pleasure in doing because she wishes equally with me to assist in cultivating the laudable desire for gaining information respecting other Countries which you my dear Catherine & Willy have shewn. I sincerely trust my dear little girl will have the same taste'. A letter of wonderful content and providing a first hand account of Franklin's experiences whilst travelling in the Mediterranean and the Greek islands in particular. V-2 ROCKET: A small archive or original typed documents (some carbon copies, others mimeographed) relating to Nazi Germany's development of the V-2 rocket, the world's first long-range guided ballistic missile, thirty pages, mainly 4to, n.p. (Headquarters S), October 1944 - January 1945, some stamped as Top Secret, in German. 'Accompanied by a complete English translation' . The documents include Test Reports containing various technical data relating to trials of vertical launches to 65 km in clear skies ('for observation and filming of possible in-flight break-up during ascent phase), trials of accelerometers, pyrotechnic ignition, generator batteries and fibreglass protection, further detailing results and observations including the application of new non-flammable yellow paint to aid visual tracking, satisfactory control and radio systems etc., concluding that the 'device cleared for firing' and in another test stating that the rocket had insufficient thrust and after 155 seconds of flight it was 'seen to fall into a transverse altitude' and at 210 seconds (approximately 52 km altitude) the rocket oscillated severely, turning 'into a narrow corkscrew-like twisting motion' and that, at about the same time, 'the yellow paint began to turn a sludgy brown' and at 271 seconds the rocket was 'no longer behaving abnormally' and 'exploded in bright flames'; a summary of a Rocket School's training stating, in part, 'There being no experience in deployment of the A4 [the technical name of the V-2, i.e. Aggregat 4] and the technology being highly advanced, the training was at first purely technical in conception. At HAP 11 [Heimat Artillery Park 11, Karlshagen, Pomerania] it was done in such a way that the engineers working there also acted as teachers on a first course that trained specialists for the first launch batteries' further stating that the original plan could not be implemented because a concentration of specialist rocket force manpower at HAP 11 was undesirable on account of the possibility of aerial attack and therefore the Headquarters were moved to Koszalin, providing a table of organisation to include administrative staff, specialists including a counterespionage officer, guard platoon troops, armourers, orderlies, cooks and instructors etc., and concluding 'the staffing envisaged is necessary for the provision of the courses…..special importance is accorded to training the rising generation as officers, NCOs and men for the rocket forces. Any reduction in the establishment here proposed would endanger the success of the planned training'; a Map Exercise prepared by Education Staff in preparation for the deployment of a long-range rocket and detailing the enemy's situation as having 'assembled strong land forces in Southern Sweden with numerous warships and transports off the south coast, in preparation for landing on German Baltic coast' and the enemy's air situation as growing in superiority with heavy bomb attacks on Kolberg and Koszalin and 'many low-flying planes which….have attacked two of our supply trucks'; and a Field Report statement by Specialist Officer Metzler, dated 20th January 1945 and stating, in part, 'The undersigned was posted on attachment to Techn. Combat Unit, Commissioner for Special Assignment (Army) at the start of the deployment of the V-2 weapon in early September 1944….where he provided engineering services until the termination of the attachment in mid-January 1945…..The undersigned joined the battery at Haarzuilens…..the firing position was located in a suburb of Den Haag, where the battery executed the double launch that fired the first two rockets on London. The battery was withdrawn from Holland in mid-September on account of the English airborne landing at Arnhem, moving to a firing position…..of Westphalia to bombard targets Liege and Antwerp…..Firing suffered at first from the well-known teething problems. Supply left much to be desired……as a result, firing operations were at first very slow…..Night operations were particularly inefficient…..With systematic training, manning changes and exercises, firing operations have now been brought to a very high level of competence…..The normal time to prepare a device for firing, from the start to launch, is on average around 90 minutes……Firing was in general hardly affected by enemy action, though some delays to work and firing on account of the presence of enemy aircraft had to be accepted. During deployment in Holland, the firing position only once suffered a daylight attack by low flying planes using on-board armament….Changes of position were thus frequently ordered while deployed in Holland. In Westphalia, whose landscape is dotted with many wooded copses, no change of position proved necessary. The battery fired for two months from the same position without ever being discovered by the frequent spotter planes', continuing to detail various problems and difficulties in the launches of V-2 rockets including the failure of the Volkswagen motor in starting, inadequate power supply, loose fitting valves and pumps, leaks, incorrect or incomplete wiring systems, faulty circuits, combustion chamber explosions etc., and also commenting on training 'Observation of a well-functioning firing platoon reveals that the steps of the launch operation follow each other like clockwork…..the whole platoon being fused together into a single working unit in which each individual does what is necessary for the rapid execution of the operation, either on his own initiative or at most in response to a codeword…..' Some of the documents bear pencil and ink annotations and corrections. Some extensive age wear, including tears, areas of paper loss, staining and some evidence of singing caused by previous fire damage. Only FR, Qty. £3000-4000
