Orchies "Political Pottery" jug depicting a Russian Bear crushing a Soldier bearing a bag inscribed "Coree" - the French for Korean - to mark the Russian advancement into Korea in 1898 which ultimately led to the Boxer Rebellion and the Russo-Japanese War. Polychrome glazed majolica with crimson glaze to interior. Impressed mark to base "RJ". H 23cm. In 1886 Emile and Joseph L'Herminé Declercq established a pottery in Orchies (Flanders) close to the famous ceramic centre of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux. From the early faience pottery, the brothers moved on to produce majolica wares - including a range of humorous jugs and commemorative jugs - such as this. (M)

Also with a model of a Partridge (Model 2261, 18cms long), Pair of Geese (Model 609, 15cms high), and a Bear cub. (4). *CR All seem in good condition, Polar Bear has a tiny nick to the base.
