J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Washington Locomotive" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States Washington Commemorative Cover postmarked December 20, 1994. When confronted with a mountain range, the visionaries who built America's railroads had three choices: go around it, over it or through it. Those were the options available to John F. Stevens, engineer for the Great Northern Railway, when he found the Cascade Range between him and his proposed route to Puget Sound. Stevens had already brought the Great Northern through the Rocky Mountains. That experience helped him recognize the virtues of the pass that would eventually bear his name. Stevens Pass was ideal in that it allowed for several different routes. In fact, over the years, the Great Northern has had three routes at the Pass, one over it and two through it. The first ran across the summit on a series of eight arduous and time-consuming switchbacks. Not long after the switchback line was completed, work began on the original Cascade Tunnel. Nine years later, on December 20, 1900, the tunnel was opened and the switchbacks were closed. Although the new route was a vast improvement, it was still beset with severe curves, miles of snow sheds and four-percent grades. So in 1925, the Great Northern began construction on another tunnel at a more favorable site. Opened on January 29, 1929, the second Cascade Tunnel runs 7.8 miles, making it the longest railroad tunnel in the United States. Great Northern's 2-8-0 freight engine No. 1106, featured on this artwork, was built in 1901 by the Rogers Locomotive Works. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14912)

Lot 451

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Cottontail Bunnies" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Smokey Bear stamp block issued August 13, 1984. Underneath the waving boughs of a tall oak tree is a female rabbit, called a doe, busying herself with the construction of a nest. Sometimes, she will find an abandoned skunk nest or other depression in the earth . . . and other times she will paw into the ground herself to form a suitable hole. Then she lines the nest with soft warm fur from her underbelly and straw from the surrounding meadows and fields to make a soft and snug resting place for her newborn bunnies. The proud mother gives birth to a half a dozen or so babies -- which are born with their eyes closed, naked and helpless. During the days that follow, the mother scampers about near the nursery, munching on tender grasses and buds, so she may return in the evening to nurse her ravenous bunnies. Within eight days the bunnies open their eyes . . . and only two weeks after birth they venture out into the world, eager to explore the forest. The bunnies curiously nose a butterfly. Image Size: 11.75 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 20 x 20 in. Unframed. (B07913)

Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. Kansas" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the U.S.S. Kansas. The U.S.S. Kansas was commissioned on 18 April 1907 with Captain Charles B. Vreeland in command. The new battleship then sailed to Hampton Roads to become part of the famous "Great White Fleet." On 9 December 1907 she passed in review before President Theodore Roosevelt while getting underway for the first leg of the Fleet's historic world cruise. After circling the globe, she again passed in review before President Roosevelt on 22 February 1909 ending a widely acclaimed voyage of good will, which also subtly, but effectively, demonstrated America's strength to the world. She was then assigned to the 2nd Battleship Division which sailed for Europe in November 1910. Upon the U.S.S. Kansas' return to the States in 1911, she was pressed into duty by the the United States Naval Academy for midshipman training cruises. However, the U.S.S. Kansas was called to special service on 1 July 1913 to bear the body of the Venezuelan ambassador to the United States back to La Guaira. She remained along the South American coast to investigate reports of revolutionary activities and forestall armed anti-American insurrections. The U.S.S. Kansas spent the majority of World War I as a training vessel before becoming the flagship for Rear Admiral Charles F. Hughes, Commander of Battleship Division 4, Squadron 2. Image Size: 13.5 x 15.5 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B09757)

A much-celebrated, magazine-featured, Two-Door Classic in an evocative period hue.A very late-production two-door first registered on 25/06/1981Comprehensive body restoration and rebuilt overdrive about 10 years agoAttractively presented in, period-correct, Tuscan BlueRe-trimmed in the EXACT period correct ‘teddy bear’ velour (now completely unobtainable) and most of the carpet replaced with new/old stock resulting in an 'almost new' appearanceFrom 5-years ownership and we understand has covered a genuine mileage of c68,000The car featured extensively in the JLR 70th Anniversary celebrations at their experience centre in Spain and was part of the after-dinner parade and presentationIt was also invited to the Goodwood Speedweek Range Rover 50th celebration in 2020 and has been featured in many significant magazine articles, including Octane, Car etc.Good history file including invoices totalling £8,729 for restoration work in 2011. Fresh MOT valid until 22/10/2022 with 'No Advisories'. 2-door Classic Range Rovers are wholly endearing and always seem in fashion, blending in effortlessly whether at Goodwood or a local country show.NB: The cherished Registration Number HEG 8E does not form part of the sale. The no-nonsense Land Rover was an unashamed agricultural workhorse and, though fully roadable, was never intended to cosset its occupants. From day one, there therefore lay scope for the production of a sibling that combined the Landie’s much vaunted off-road prowess with a greater degree of on-road chic and comfort. Though various such plans were mooted in the 1950s, it was the emergence of the SUV market in America a decade later that finally convinced Rover to create such a model. Spen King famously oversaw the ‘100 inch Station Wagon’ project that was finally revealed to the world as the Range Rover in 1970 - a David Bache design that created a whole new genre of go-anywhere vehicles, which remains in full bloom today.Production of the first generation, two-door cars finished in 1981 and this is one of the last off the line, being first registered on 25/06/1981. It had a comprehensive body restoration and some mechanical work including a rebuilt overdrive about 10 years ago and today it's attractively presented in, period-correct, Tuscan Blue. What makes it really special however, is the fact that it was re-trimmed in the EXACT period-correct ‘teddy bear’ velours, now completely unobtainable and, even when our vendor was at JLR, it proved impossible to source any of this trim. The carpet has also been replaced with new old stock and the interior, consequently, has an almost new feel. This rather smart, early RR is on offer from five-years ownership and we understand has covered a genuine 68,000 miles. It featured extensively in the JLR 70th Anniversary celebrations at their experience centre in Spain and was part of the after-dinner parade and presentation. It was also invited to the Goodwood Speedweek Range Rover 50th celebration in 2020 and has been featured in many significant magazine articles, including Octane', Car and Land Rover Owner. It has a good history file including invoices totalling £8,729 for restoration work in 2011 and has a fresh MOT valid until 22/10/2022 with 'No Advisories'. 2-door Classic Range Rovers are wholly endearing and always seem in fashion, blending in effortlessly whether at Goodwood or a local country show.SpecificationMake: LAND ROVERModel: CLASSICYear: 1981Chassis Number: SALLHABV2AA111859Registration Number: RKP 608WEngine Number: 34140157F Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 68030 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: 'Teddy Bear' velourClick here for more details and images
