A Red Overlay Glass Snuff Bottle, circa 1850-1900, boldly carved on one side with a dog tethered to a pillar, on the other with an eagle, lion mask and ring to each shoulder, green stone domed cover, 8.2cm high overall; and Another, carved in relief with three goats pasturing beneath willow trees, agate stopper, 7.1cm high (2). A satirical bottle decorated with an eagle and a dog conveys the impression of heroism. Eagle and bear is a homophone for heroes in Chinese. In northern China the word for bear is often used with the word for dog preceding it, "a dog-bear". Eagle and dog are both fierce and aggressive but the dog has no choice about remaining loyal to his master.

A large leather bound volume containing a selection of black and white photographs of "Kiln Quay" - the house, garden, interior rooms and views from the garden, each page mounted with a single image, the cover with gold lettering "Kiln Quay" together with a similar volume of photographs of "The Wincel" (Tompsets Bank, East Sussex)c.1929 , a smaller album of The Wincel images and another of "Farley Court" (Farley Hill, Reading) c.1933 (4). NB: In 1919 Joan Beach fell in love with a Cornish sea captain. She could not bear to leave her beautiful, 400 year old house in Sussex, so moved it to Cornwall where it was reconstructed in Flushing. The photographs were taken c.1928 in Cornwall and provide an extensive record of the house and grounds at that date. A white mohair polar bear soft toy, `Ivy`, with glass eyes, felt ears, and a black vertically stitched nose, standing on all fours, 28cm long; together with a white mohair polar bear cub, `Brumas`, with glass eyes and a black stitched nose, 9cm long (the latter threadbare), (2). Note: Brumas was born on 27th November 1949 at London Zoo and was the first polar bear cub to be reared successfully in Britain. She was named after her keepers, Bruce (Bru-) and Sam (reversed -mas). PHYLLIS`S TEDDY BEARS: A Farnell Teddy Bear with golden mohair, clear and black glass eyes, pronounced clipped muzzle, black stitched nose and mouth, swivel head, jointed limb with cloth pads, black stitched claws with webbing on hands, hump, inoperative growler and original pink ribbon, circa 1908, 21.1/2in. (54.5cm) high (minor wear, needs a clean, slight damage to pads and one foot pad missing); his lifelong companion Teddy Bear with golden mohair, orange and black glass stick eyes, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, slotted-in ears, swivel head and jointed limbs, possibly American, circa 1908, 12in. (30.5cm) high (worn, one damaged, glue mark around eyes, split to top of right arm and pads recovered); and an original circular photograph of the owner with her two brothers, image size, 4in. (10.25cm) (3), Provenance: The two bears were the treasured possessions of Phyllis Violet Harman Holland (nee Heath), born in Lewisham in 1907. The photograph dating from 1909, shows Phyllis with her two brothers Douglas and Eric. The bears were Phyllis`s close companions until her death in 1992, including, for the smaller one (a gift from her parents), a spell at boarding school with her. Phyllis`s father Edgar Arthur Heath sadly died suddenly in 1908 and her mother in 1918 after a long illness. Phyllis`s mother, Violet Florence Hattie Heath (nee Harman) was the youngest child of Alfred Hugh Harman (1814-1913) who was a noted photographic pioneer and founded Ilfords Photographic Company in 1879. The Farnell bear was a present from her grandfather.

(12cm) high (one leg loose); and a display cushion. A MEERSCHAUM EAGLE CLAW PIPE. fitted leather case with red velvet lining, 4.1/4in. (11cm) long (repair to stem). A LARGE STUDIO PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPH OF GASPARE GATTI. Jacquiers, 213 regent St, 11.1/2 x 9in. (29 x 23cm. Gaspare Antonino Pietro (Luigi) Gatti, was born in Montalto Pavese, Italy on 3 January 1875. He was one of eleven children of Paolo Gatti and Maria Nascimbene. Gatti left Italy for England when he was still young. He married a British subject and together they had a son, Vittorio. When Luigi signed on to the Titanic on the April 1912, he gave his home address as "Montalto", Harborough Road, Southampton. Luigi Gatti joined the restaurant business at an early age. In London, he ran two Ritz restaurants, the `Gatti`s Adelphi` and the `Gatti`s Strand`. On the Olympic and later the Titanic, he would run the a la carte restaurants with staff drawn from his two London restaurants. Gatti died in the sinking, his body was recovered by the Minia (No.313) and buried in Fairview Cemetery, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Effects listed by the Minia- "gold watch and chain; sovereign case; Kruger sovereign; silver match box; $6 American notes; pair cuff links marked "L. G"; diamond ring: 2 collar buttons; knife marked "Imperial Restaurant"; key; rubber eraser; lead pencil; incase, 7 sovereigns; 2 half sovereigns, 5/6d in silver; copper coins; bunch of keys with the followings tags "Comptroller`s Office restaurant 1st class entrance to "B" Deck; the other "Restaurant Manager, entrance to Cafe Parisian"; laundry, marked lined collar "HR"; two pockets kinives marked "H.R."; one pair of gloves. Sadly neither the Teddy Bear nor pipe are mentioned here, it is not known if there records are conclusive. The items included in this lot were donated by Vittorio`s widow in 1986 and exhibited at the Ribchester Museum of Childhood. They were sold along with the contents of the museum on 17th August 1995. It would appear that the bear in this lot is by Schuco and later in date than sinking of the Titanic, as Schreyer & Co. was founded in 1912 by Heinrich M?ller and Heinrich Schreyer. Prior to this M?ller worked for Bing and there is a slim possibility that a similar bear was made by them years earlier, although there are no records yet discovered to back this theory up.
