A Chinese silver wire-inlaid bronze tripod ding censer, bearing Xuande regnal date equivalent to 1431 AD, but probably late 18th century, the stout sides meticulously inlaid in fine and thicker wires, on each side three typical Ming-style dragons disputing a pearl between a pair of applied elephant head handles hung with loose rings, all between a galleried rim and three short conical feet below, the underside centre inlaid with an elaborate dragon-framed cartouche containing an eight character mark in Zhuanshu seal script, Xuande wu nian Wu Bangzuo zhi, 'made by Bangzuo in the fifth year of emperor Xuande [1431]' maximum diameter approximately 46cm Notes: By far the majority of Chinese ding and gui censers cast in bronze bear a cast or inlaid 'Xuande' mark; almost always apocryphal. Several un-inlaid bronze censers are recorded bearing similar Wu Bangzuo inscriptions, some incorporating an identical Xuande 'fifth year' date. While the dragons on the present piece are Ming in style they appear to be more Qing in character.
