Lot 603

the top section, originally probably a shallow dish or plate, with full London hallmarks for 1854, the panelled and fluted rim each engraved with alternate scroll and foliate decoration to a vacant field, the panelled base, with full London hallmarks for 1855, engraved to match, with fluted rim, signed to the underside of the plate, 22.6ozt (Dimensions: h: 9cm w: 26cm)(h: 9cm w: 26cm)Footnote: Other notes: Current UK hallmarking regulations allows (with some minor exceptions) for only one complete hallmark to be applied to an item. The fact that both the base and the top bear complete sets of hallmarks indicates that the item is constructed from two separate items and was not originally designed to be a tazza. It is interesting though, to note that both pieces have been made by the same maker and the dates are just one year apart. In Victorian times, the date letter at the London assay office was changed on 29th May, and not 1st January which is the case today, so articles submitted at the beginning and at the end of the same calendar year would have two different date letters. It is very possible that this is the case in this example with both pieces probably being assayed in the same calendar year. It is likely that both pieces were originally part of the same larger dinner service. (Reviewed and passed for sale by the Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office)

The artist's grandson remembers Teddy Tail with Apple hanging in his bedroom when he was a young boy, and subsequently hung it in his house to entertain his own children when they were younger. Teddy Tail , a comic strip in the Daily Mail , was the first daily cartoon strip in a British newspaper, paving the way eventually for the likes of Rupert Bear and Pip, Squeak and Wilfred . Charles Folkard based the mouse Teddy Tail on his son Edward, who became a sculptor, and was three when his father invented the character in 1915. Folkard continued to draw the strip until 1926, when his brother, Harry, took it over, followed eventually by a number of other artists. Teddy Tail became enormously popular and the creation of Rupert Bear for the Daily Mirror was a direct result of this. There was an abundance of spin-off merchandise, such as annuals, badges, soft toys, jigsaws, biscuits, etc., and by the mid 1930s, the 'Teddy Tail League' boasted around 750,000 members.
