Attributed to John Lewis Reilly after Stephen Pearce, portrait of Sir William Edward Parry Arctic Explorer and hydrographer, 1790-1855, in naval uniform, oil on board, inscribed on reverse in pencil with the names of the sitter, Reilly and Pearce, 15" x 11". This picture has been consigned for sale by the owner of the previous lot. HISTORICAL NOTE: Sir William Edward Parry 1790-1855. Sir William Parry joined the Royal Navy at the age of 12 and was a pioneer of exploration for the North West Passage. The following is an extract from the Canadian Dictionary of biography on line. " As an explorer and navigator in the Arctic, Sir William Edward Parry ranks in importance with Captain James Cook and Sir James Clark Ross. He was the first explorer to penetrate the Arctic archipelago and open the passage through Lancaster Sound, Barrow Strait, and Viscount Melville Sound that subsequent expeditions would follow. Furthermore, he was the first to winter in the high Arctic deliberately and, through his experience, he developed techniques necessary for survival in these difficult conditions. Although his participation in Arctic exploration ended in 1827, he maintained a lively interest in the Admiralty’s projects in this region and late in 1848 he was called upon to advise the Admiralty, as a member of the Arctic Council, on the measures to be taken in search of Sir John Franklin’s expedition, lost in the Arctic since 1845. Parry’s contribution to the exploration of the Arctic is recognized in the number of geographical features that bear his name.

Lot 236

A set of eight mahogany dining chairs, in the Regency style, 19th century, with curved bar back, the armchairs with scrolling arms above a drop-in seat on sabre legs Condition report** Percfectly satisfactory condition overall but the chairs are quite faded and do have a rather "scrubbed" patina. They all bear the usual minor knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use but structurally they appear sound.

Lot 316

A pair of grey painted wood armchairs, circa 1810, in Empire style, possibly Swedish, the scrolling backs with turned toprail above a rectangular panel with lozenge decoration and central motif, above a pierced anthemion splat above a bar, with downswept arms turned baluster uprights, the bowfronted seat with needlework upholstery depicting classical figures and swags, on turned tapering legs headed by a carved floral lozenge Condition Report:** Marks, scratches and abrasions consistent with age and use. Old break and repair to the top rail and splits to rectangular panel of back. Scuffs to painted surface through to the timber. Seat rails have age and are probably original however we cannot guarantee this. Upholstery is faded, thread bear and partially stained
