The base with a silver-inlaid two-character Shisou mark.Provenance: The Mee-Din and Robert W. Moore Collection. Robert W. Moore is a famed California collector of Chinese and Korean art, whose passion began in the 1950s when he served in the US Army and was stationed in Korea. A number of vessels and sculptures from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century bear his name, sometimes in combination with a hall name, Jinyu tang ('Hall of Prosperity').Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 6 October 2015, lot 171Price: HKD 62,500 or approx. Anniversary Bear - "Clementine", designed and painted by patients on Ward 3 at Sheffield Children's Hospital with artist, Jordanna Farrimond. Bid on the last Little Bear of the Bears of Sheffield sculpture trail which saw 60 big Bears and 100 little Bears take to the streets of Sheffield in 2021 to raise money for Sheffield Children's Hospital. Clementine was painted in November, just after the autumn leaves had fallen, so the children on Ward 3 at Sheffield Children's Hospital decided to use warm autumn colours inspired by the time of year. Artfelt artist Jordnna Farrimond encouraged the children to extend the autumn theme by printing leaves over the top and the children added a bit of 'bling' giving Clementine a gold bracelet. Clementine's white stripes are bandages which the children chose to show that Clementine, like them, was a patient in hospital at the time of painting.   Please Note; Viewing, payment and collection arrangements to be made direct with The Children's Hospital Charity. Dedicated to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (1532? -88), favourite of Elizabeth I. In 1585 Leicester was appointed as commander of the English expedition to the Low Countries to aid the fight against The Duke of Parma, nephew of Philip II of Spain. On arrival Leicester was received with great hope and offered the absolute government of the States-General, which he accepted much to Elizabeth's displeasure. Despite this honour Leicester was not a competent General and the campaign faltered, so much so that in under a year he had left the country and England had offered to make peace with Spain. A 12 plate work was published in 1586 which depicted Leicester's triumphant entry at The Hague (see Landwehr, Splendid Ceremonies, 48 ).The emblems are split into three distinct kinds as Whitney describes in his preface, ' Historicall , as representing the actes of some noble persons, being matter of historie. Naturall, as in expressing the nature of creatures, for example the love of the yonge Storkes.... Morall , pertaining to vertue and instruction of life, which is the chief of the three...'Included is an emblem representing the achievements of Sir Francis Drake.Provenance: Fontaine Walker; John Landwehr (sold his sale, Bloomsbury Auctions, 15th November, 2006; bookplates).

The horn is of a warm golden honey-brown tone. With a massive carved and pierced wood stand, similarly decorated throughout with bunches of grapes on vines. (2)Provenance: Joseph Vallot (16 February 1854 – 11 April 1925). Maître Lair Dubreuil, Commissaire-Priseur, Paris, February 2nd, 1926. Gaston LAZARD (1878-1956), Paris, France. Jane LEVY (1886-1985), wife of the above, Paris France. Thence by descent to the present owner. A copy of an invoice from Maître Lair Dubreuil, dated February 2nd, 1926, confirming the sale of lot 160 "Corne de Rhinoceros Sculpté" to Monsieur Lazard, the grandfather of the present owner, is accompanying this lot. Joseph Vallot (16 February 1854 – 11 April 1925) was a French scientist, astronomer, botanist, geographer, cartographer and alpinist and "one of the founding fathers of scientific research on Mont Blanc". He is known mainly for his fascination with Mont Blanc and his work in funding and constructing a high-altitude observatory below its summit, and for the many years of study and research work that he and his wife conducted both there, and at their base in Chamonix. The observatory and adjacent refuge that he constructed for use by mountain guides and their clients attempting Mont Blanc summit both still bear his name today, despite being rebuilt in modern times. Condition: Excellent condition with some old wear, few natural age cracks, and minor chips or losses to exposed areas. The wood base with natural age cracks, minor chips and losses, and light surface scratches overall. The ensemble with a good, naturally grown patina.Weight: 1,738 g Dimensions: Height 62.2 cm (total), 49.8 cm (the horn cup)Lavishly decorated full-tip cups from this group were generally produced from the 19th century onwards, mainly in Canton where they were fashionable and in high demand, especially from Western collectors. The largest possible horns were selected and carved in an extravagant fashion, as clearly demonstrated by the present cup.Expert's note: A full-tip rhinoceros cup of this magnificent size, still retaining its matching wood base, and as well preserved as the present lot, is extremely rare, because due to their intricate openwork design these cups are prone to damage.Literature comparison: Compare a related rhinoceros cup on loan to the Durham University Oriental Museum, illustrated in Jan Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, London, 1999, pl. 38. Compare also a related rhinoceros cup, dated to the 19th century, in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number 243-1896.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 15 September 2011, lot 1231Price: USD 314,500 or approx.
