An English saltglazed white stoneware bear jug and cover, Staffordshire, mid 18th c, the head forming the cover with round brown glazed eyes, the open jaw revealing curled tongue, the almost cylindrical body with outstretched fore paws, covered in 'grog', 24.5cm h Provenance: Sotheby's, 23 October 1979, lot 75 (as Nottingham) For a similar example see the catalogue of the Burnap Collection, plate 187 Old partly made up repair to pocket of body and neck of head, lower jar chipped, the chain which is apparently contemporary probably original, suspended from the upper jaw by string, tail chipped, one of the rear paws chipped, no recent restoration
