A rare, unique and poignant piece of WWII Second World War history - ' Edward ' - the teddy bear of Staff Officer Acting Temporary Captain C. R. Lamb of British No. 30 Commando Assault Unit, which was carried ashore the beaches of France on D-Day and kept with him until victory in 1945. Edward was kept safely tucked inside Lamb's Bergen backpack throughout his service. After the war, Lamb made sure to pin his three miniature medals to his companion's chest, where they have remained ever since. The medal trio comprising of the 1939-45 Star, Defense Medal and War Medal. The bear being a British made teddy, with wood wool stuffing, horizontally stitched nose and jointed limbs. Suffering some damage over time, including a repair to one arm. With Lambs' original '30' Commando uniform patch. The bear is void of all fur and comes 'well loved'. Measures approx; 40cm tall.No. 30 Commando, from 1943–1946 known as 30 Assault Unit, was a British Commando unit during the Second World War, originally formed to gather intelligence. Interestingly, one of the key figures involved in its organisation was Commander Ian Fleming (later author of the James Bond 007 novels). 30AU took part in D-Day and the subsequent Normandy Campaign. One detachment, code-named Pikeforce, landed on Juno Beach. Its major task on D-Day was the capture of a radar station at Douvres-la-Delivrande, north of Caen (although the defending Germans held out until 17 June).[2] Led by Squadron Leader David Nutting (RAF), a detachment code-named Woolforce (commanded by Colonel A. R. Wooley), landed at Utah Beach on D-Day plus 4, tasked with examining suspected German V-1 missile sites. 30AU also took part in the capture of Cherbourg. They launched an assault on Octeville – a suburb to the south west of port. This was the location of the Kriegsmarine naval intelligence HQ known as Villa Meurice which the Commandos captured along with 20 officers and 500 men. Provenance; from an extensive private collection of WWII militaria and memorabilia.
