**A COMPOSITE GERMAN LIGHT FIELD ARMOUR, PARTLY NUREMBERG, LATE 16TH TO EARLY 17TH CENTURY, WITH LATER ETCHED DECORATION comprising burgonet with rounded one-piece skull slightly boxed at each side and rising to a high file-roped medial comb, projecting forward to an obtusely-pointed peak struck at its centre with the quality-control mark of the City of Nuremberg and three circles in triangular formation, fitted at its flanged lower edge, just beneath a slender tapering plume-holder, with an obtusely-pointed neck-guard of one lame, and at each side with a cheek-piece shaped at its upper front corner to fit over the rear of the peak and flanged outwards at its lower edge to form a continuation of the neck-guard, and pierced at its centre within a raised circular panel decorated with an eight-pointed recessed asterisk with nine small circular auditory holes arranged in rosette-formation; 'Almain' collar formed of three lames front and rear, the lowest front one struck internally with the Nuremberg mark of an N within a circle (the lowest rear one associated), and each side fitted with an integral spaudler, the left formed of seven lames and the right of eight (two of the left and five of the right restored or associated, and one of each patched); breastplate formed of a medially-ridged main plate fitted at its arm-openings with moveable gussets (the right restored) and at its flanged lower edge with a fauld of three lames of which the lowest is cut at its centre with a shallow arch separating a pair of long pendent tassets each of seven lames extending to just above the knee (the right associated and reworked to match the left and the inner end of three of its lames patched); backplate formed in one piece with a broad shallow neck-opening and a short flange at the waist; a circular besague (restored) rising slightly to a conical boss at its centre; fingered gauntlets (the right restored) each formed of a long, flared and pointed cuff fitted with a short separate inner plate, five metacarpal-plates, a transversely-roped knuckle-plate, a shaped finger-plate, and scaled finger and thumb-defences, the latter laterally attached by a short leather hinge to the inner end of the last metacarpal-plate, and the whole retaining a fragmentary buff-leather lining-glove; the main edges of the armour turned inward and decorated, except on the backplate, with roping, the subsidiary edges of the burgonet decorated with pairs of incised lines, and the surface of the armour decorated with bands and borders of later etching consisting for the most part of running foliate scrolls executed on a blackened and stippled ground, but including on the breastplate three coats of arms and on the comb of the burgonet, warriors in combat accompanied by a bear and lion on the right and a scroll bearing the inscription HERCVLA on the left See note at front of catalogue for information concerning stands Provenance The armour without burgonet, Charassé, rue Bonaparte, Paris, circa 1889 The burgonet, Seymour Hayden, sold F. A good carved 'bug bear' coconut in the form of a money box, the slot with a lyre below 'Viva Mexico', the body pierced and carved with three figural oval panels, a male and two female, over a border inscribed 'Un Recurdo De San Juan De Ulua', the face with mother-of-pearl eyes and open mouth, 15cm.
A group of dolls, comprising; a 19th century carved wooden doll torso with painted head, 15.5cm, a small pink articulated teddy bear, probably Schuco, one foot lacking, 6.5cm, a similar monkey in velvet tail coat, both feet lacking, 8cm, an articulated small bisque doll, stamped '67Germany', 6.5cm, and two others. A Cunard Queen Elizabeth II photograph, invitations to a banquet held in the USA on the occasion of the visit of her Majesty the Queen of Denmark and the Prince of Denmark in 1976, two Royal Navy flying log, two photographs to include HMS Frobisher at Portsmouth dated 1946 and two ceramic floor tiles from Italy and Denmark. CONDITION REPORT Both bear numerous stamps relating to Course and Flag officers, Commanding Officers and signatures.
A RUSSIAN BLACK LACQUER SMALL TRAY, late 19th century, of rounded square form, painted in colours and gilt with peasants beside a barn watching a dancing bear and his drumming trainer, printed six medal mark, 7 1/2" square, together with a similar vesta case of oval section with lift-off cover and strike to base painted with a washer woman, gilt double eagle and PAA to inner cover, 2 1/2" high (2)
1st century BC-1st century AD. A marble portrait head of a noble Julio-Claudian boy, possibly the prince Gaius Caesar, with short hair falling in delicately incised waves, deep-set eyes, small, full lips and a distinctive, narrow chin; supplied with a custom-made stand. The short, wavy hairstyle, deep-set eyes and narrow chin bear similarities with a Julio-Claudian marble portrait head held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. no. 2011.376, that is commonly identified as Gaius Caesar. Close parallels, in terms of facial shape and features, can also be made with the portrait of Gaius held by the University of Innsbruck, inv.no. I/507; see F. Krinzinger, Das Bildnis des jugendlichen Augustus von Velia, AA 1976, 91-101 for parallels. 28 cm including stand (11"). Property of a gentleman; previously from a German collection formed in the early 1980s. The child of Julia Augusta and Marcus Agrippa, Gaius was adopted by his maternal grandfather Augustus, who designated him (alongside Gaius' younger brother Lucius) as his heirs. At the age of 14, Gaius was granted the honorific title of 'Princeps Iuventutis' (Prince of Youth), and at 20 became a consul. Embarking on a military career, Gaius died whilst on campaign in Lycia at the age of 24, leaving no heirs. According to Tacitus (Annals, 1.3), Augustus' wife Livia was suspected of foul play in his death, seeking as she did to install her son Tiberius as Augustus' successor. Fine condition, small loss to nose.
10th-12th century AD. An assemblage of bronze and other amulets comprising: a flat-section distributor formed as addorsed horse-heads with billet detailing, transverse bar beneath with six coiled wire chains; ovoid bronze rumbler bell; silver bear-claw pendant; bronze miniature knife in its sheath; bronze casket key; silver reliquary capsule; silver axe with lunate blade; suspended on a substantial double-link chain from a wire loop. 55 grams, 31cm (12 1/4"). Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972. Fine condition.
8th-10th century AD. A mixed group of bronze figural buckle loops comprising: on with attachment bar to the rear, D-shaped loop, four bear-heads to the junctions; one with four beast-heads in plan; one with ribbed loop, addorsed bird-heads with bar between the beaks. 13 grams total, 24-31mm (1 - 1 1/4"). Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent, 1972. [3, No Reserve] Fine condition.
Pre-stamp mail, 1825-39 Selection of 'Ship' or 'Packet Letters' entires or outer letter sheets, mostly from St John (9) to London or Dublin, although others from St Stephen or St Andrews, most unusually one of the St John covers addressed to Malta; majority bear British SHIP LETTER marks incl Dover, Gravesend, Liverpool or Deal), but one boot-legged and three at "all-in" 1s packet rates with Halifax, Nova Scotia transit c.d.s., the 1825 entire letter to Malta with boxed step-type "DEAL/SHIP LETTER" and endorsed at foot "To the care of Messrs. Bainbridge & Brown, London" and possibly forwarded by private means, this may be the earliest recorded New Brunswick cover addressed to Malta. (11)
Early 20th Century G & J Lines (London) Rocking Horse ''Queenie'': dappled grey rocking horse with glass eyes and open mouth, on swing-stand with caps to ends of swing irons, includes saddle and leather tack. Metal badge with thistle logo and 'G & J Lines London' to chest. Requires restoration - part of mane included but unattached, leather tack cracked and heavy paint loss. Measures 93cm in length, 86cm in height and 29cm in width. Together with a teddy bear, h.43cm and a wooden toy believed to have been made by a Prisoner of War, h.34cm.
A baby's silver rattle formed as a Teddy bear, fitted with two bells and with a mother of pearl handle, Birmingham 1988, a silver plated Dupont, Paris rectangular lighter, a sugar sifting spoon, a French circular pill box, an Oriental ivory square stud carved with two figures and a quantity of pencil leads.
