A rare circa 1904 / 1905 believed Steiff golden mohair teddy bear. Having large pronounced snout and hump to back. Later stuffing with original features, retaining some partial original woodwool stuffing. Jointed limbs with original elongated arms. PROVENANCE: Originally purchased by the great grandmother of the vendor in around 1904/5 whilst on a tour of Europe and particularly Germany. This lot includes copies of the photographs pictured taken around 1955 of the vendor with the teddy bear.

Rupert Bear is a children's comic strip character created by the English artist Mary Tourtel and first appearing in the Daily Express newspaper on 8 November 1920. Rupert's initial purpose was to win sales from the rival Daily Mail and Daily Mirror. In 1935, the mantle of Rupert artist and storyteller was taken over by Alfred Bestall, who was previously an illustrator for Punch and other glossy magazines. Bestall proved to be successful in the field of children's literature and worked on Rupert stories and artwork into his 90s. More recently, various other artists and writers have continued the series.

AN ANTIQUE c1900 believed Steiff teddy bear. Heavy pronounced snout, woodwool stuffing and original black glass eyes. Jointed limbs and sewn ears. Provenance; Belonging to the same family since 1938, 'Norbet' as he is known was acquired in 1938 from a Farmers' daughter in Brislington who had Norbert since childhood.
