A NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN BEAD AND CLAW NECKLACE composed of thirteen “bear” claws threaded onto a hide thong necklace of white, yellow, brown and green beads, probably late 19th/early 20th century and a hide necklace in the form of a radial sun (2).. Provenance: Collected in Ontario, Canada, in the first decade of the 20th century by Miss Elizabeth White. The Hornsby Wright family and thence by descent.
Studio of Sir Anthony Van Dyck Portrait of a Gentleman, possibly Henry Jermyn later Lord Jermyn, Earl of St Albans (1604-1684) Half length wearing a black tunic and a white lace collar Oil on canvas 76 x 59cm; 30 x 23¼in In his catalogue Oliver Miller states that this picture could be a version of the full length of Jermyn formerly at Rushbooke Hall. It is likely that Jermyn could have sat to Van Dyck around 1639 when he was Master of the horse and Vice-Chamberlain to the Queen. However The National Gallery have suggested that the portrait could also be George Digby, 2nd Earl of Bristol (1612-1677), to whom the sitter does bear a strong resemblance in both the full length double portrait with Lord Russell now at Althorp Park and also the half length portrait at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Literature: Sir Oliver Millar - Van Dyck A complete catalogue of the paintings, Newshaven & London 2004 Provenance: Thomas Jones (1788-1848) who inherited Hinton House, Hinton Charterhouse in 1846 from Mary Day Edward Talbot Day Jones (1837-1911) and thence by descent to the present owner Literature: Inventory of all the Household…including Paintings at Hinton Charterhouse, the Property of the Late Thomas Jones made August 23rd-28th 1848 by English and Sons, Bath referred to as : Portrait of Lord Guildford, with moustache black vest and lace collar (Van Dyck) ++Lined, good restored condition

[WORLD WAR II]: MOULTON JAMES L. (1906-1993) British Major-General of World War II. Moulton formed Royal Marines 48 Commando and commanded them during D-Day, 1944. Poignant A.L.S., J. L. Moulton, three pages, 8vo, 48 (RM) Commando, B.L.A., 24th July 1944, to Lt. R. D. Curtis. Written in pencil, Moulton conveys sad news as the result of an investigation, `The circumstances of your brother`s death were that he was wounded early on D Day, received immediate medical treatment and was then sent to the Beach Dressing Station for further care and evacuation to England. At the Beach Dressing Station he must have died of his wounds. He was buried in the vicinity of the beach, his grave is in a war cemetery and has been properly marked and cared for.` Moulton continues to give his personal recollections of Curtis, `Geoff is a great loss. He was a promising officer and a grand chap. He was always cheerful and keen. I shall long remember him….in the trying climate, discomfort and hard work, he was always to the fore and always ready with a joke or a laugh when the rest seemed depressed. You may have heard that his troop commander, who was also with him in Sicily, was also killed on D-Day. The loss of lives like these is hard to bear, they were the price we paid for the success of our landings. In that success their leadership and bravery paid no small part.` Accompanied by the original envelope (FR), also signed by Moulton. VG Temporary Lieutenant Edward Geoff Curtis of the Royal Marines 48 commando participated in Operation Overlord and the Normandy Landings, 6th June 1944, and died of his wounds.
