After Stanley Spencer 'Girl with Dog'; 'Disciples at the Gate'; 'Me Greeting Hilda'; three offset lithographs, trial proof each plate 40 x 27cm and similar, unframed (3) These prints were probably made by Spencer's friend, the artist Henry Trivick, and are after drawings made by Spencer during the 1930s. Girl with Dog has a crease (although this is not overly obvious) in a diagonal line through the lower half, it also has light rippling and handling creases but mostly to the margins, it says 'trial' in margins. Ca. 1000–600 BC. Bronze Age. A beautiful, heavy cast bronze bracelet features a wide band with a D-shaped section. The bracelet's band is decorated with engraved line decorations, while the terminals each bear two deeply incised dot-in-circle motifs. In Bronze Age societies bracelets were used not only as jewellery but also as ritual objects of high value, which allowed their owners to store wealth before the invention of coinage. Such bracelets are discovered in burials as grave gifts or found in large hoards, and an important part of the Bronze Age cultures in both Europe and Asia. Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old London collection formed in the 1990s. Size: L:75mm / W:80mm ; 190g
Ca. 960–1279 AD. Song dynasty. A beautiful tile that may have been part of the decoration of an aristocratic tomb with three male attendants in high relief. The male attendant on the right-hand side wears a long red robe and a conical hat; the attendant at the centre wears a short tunic over red pantaloons and a soft cap; the attendant on the left wears the same attire but he also has a red belt tied at its waist and his hands are joined and held up to his chest. The faces bear traces of pink colour and capture a serene expression. The back of this tile has an impression of a handprint, which may have served as the signature of the artisan who made it. For the diversity and richness of its cultural achievements, the Song dynasty, which ruled most of China between 960 and 1279 AD, is remembered as one of China’s greatest. For more information on the Song dynasty, see Kuhn, D. (1987). The Song Dynasty, 960 to 1279: A new society reflected in its culture. Acta Humaniora, Weinheim. Provenance: From the private collection of a Somerset gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed before 2000 on the UK /European art markets. Size: L:235mm / W:295mm ; 3.9kg
Ca. 860–650 BC. Urartian. A heavy bronze bracelet with a D-shaped section and terminals shaped as two opposing ram's heads with curved horns. Urartu was an ancient kingdom of southwest Asia centred in the mountainous region southeast of the Black Sea and southwest of the Caspian Sea. Mentioned in Assyrian sources from the early 13th century BC, Urartu enjoyed considerable political power in the Middle East in the 9th and 8th centuries BC. From early in the kingdom’s history, very characteristic artefacts were manufactured, including bronze belts along with shields, quivers, helmets, bells, jewellery, and ceramic and metal vessels of many forms. Many of these artefacts bear royal inscriptions and are decorated with characteristic motifs and scenes, which consist of various deities and composite otherworldly creatures, royal rituals, hunts, battles, and genre scenes. Urartu continued to produce beautiful works of art until it was destroyed in the second half of the seventh century BC by the Medes or the Scythians. To find out more about Urartu and its art production, see Merhav, R. (1991). Urartu: A Metalworking Center in the First Millennium B.C.E. Jerusalem: Israel Museum. Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old Oxford collection formed in the 1990s. Size: L:95mm / W:125mm ; 363g
