A Swiss Black Forest hall stand, late 19th century, carved as a bear holding a tree, a small bear in the branches above an adjustable oval mirror, on stylised rocky base inset with a tin drip tray, 212cm high, 46cm wide Provenance: Charles Ethelbert Hillman (d. 1939) who was mayor of Tunbridge Wells in 1938-39. Every Summer he and his family holidayed in Switzerland and brought back various Black Forest carvings as souvenirs.
