CRIMEAN WAR RELIC THE BRASS SWORD SCABBARD OF MAJOR-GENERAL CHARLES ASHE WINDHAM, `THE HERO OF THE REDAN` for a Mameluke-hilted sword, in the original green velvet lined and fitted mahogany case with brass handle and escutcheon engraved with armorials and inscribed MAJOR GENERAL C A WINDHAM, 103cm l, mid 19th c Provenance: General Charles Ashe Windham, KCB (1810-1870) of the Coldstream Guards. A portrait of Windham, sword in hand, standing before the Redan, by Charles Cousens (c1821-1889) is in the National Army Museum. In noticing his death The Times recounted Windham`s moment of glory: "General Windham was the first to enter the stronghold, and amid the shower of bullets and cannon balls that flew around him he seemed to bear about him a charmed life. At length, finding it hopeless to obtain support by sending messengers, he coolly walked across the open space before the ramparts in the midst of a well sustained fire, to demand assistance in person . The "Royals" were then placed at his disposal; but no sooner were they pit in formation than the men in the Redan were obliged to abandon the work. The opportunity had been lost. The correspondents of the press were not slow in recording the heroic bravery of Windham on this occasion, and on the arrival of General Codrington`s despatches at the Horse Guards, the subject of this memoir was rewarded by promotion to the rank of Major-General, for his distinguished conduct in having, with the greatest intrepity and coolness, headed the column of attack with assaulted the enemy`s defences on the 8th of September 1855". AN 18TH CENTURY MEISSEN DEEP CIRCULAR BOWL, internally painted and gilt with a roundel with figure in a landscape and underglaze blue clobbered flower, the well with a hunting theme and similar underglaze blue flowers, externally lightly fluted and painted with bear hunting scenes, underglaze blue crossed swords with two dots, 8.5cms high, 16cms diameter; together with an 18th Century Meissen coffee cup, internally painted and gilt with a roundel of buildings and underglaze blue gilt clobbered flower, a figure and floral sprays to well, externally with underglaze blue gilt clobbered Chinoiserie flowers and birds, underglaze blue crossed swords (repaired damaged to both pieces) (2)
