Latin America, Mexico, early 20th century CE. An antique Mexican ex-voto depicting a man dressed in white kneeling in prayer before the Virgin Mary, the crucified Cristo Negro, and a Patriarchal cross with two bars. In retablo art, the Virgin Guadalupe is represented as a praying Madonna with a tilted head and gently curving body, with hands pressed together in a prayerful gesture and lowered eyes. She is surrounded by a mandorla comprised of golden rays and stands upon a crescent moon that is supported by a cherub. This composition was adopted from medieval illustrations of the Apocalyptic Woman and may be traced back to the 10th and 11th centuries. Her garments traditionally include a blue mantle with gold stars and trim and a red robe enriched with golden embroidery. In addition, the cherub with Byzantine like wings who appears beneath her is also a constant in renditions of the Virgin Guadalupe. The Patriarchal Cross is a symbol associated sometimes with the papacy but more frequently with the Eastern Orthodox Church. The worship of Cristo Negro has its origins in a town called Esquipulas, Guatemala in 1594 CE when an image was creatd by the Portuguese sculptor Quirio Cantano upon the request of the Guatemalan bishop. The darker complexion chosen by the early clergy was intentional, as it was thought that the indigenous population would then identify with the sufferings and sacrifice of Christ. As members of the lowest class of their society in their own land, they embraced the Cristo Negro and identified with his realistic agony and martyrdom. The dark brown Christ figures naturally darkened further to a blacker hue due to exposure to smoke and incense. And so, although the initial brown was intended to represent Indian skin color, many Christs created by the native population were created in the color black. In time miracles were ascribed to the so-called Black Christ or Cristo Negro. This example is characteristically depicted in the crucified pose, painted black, with head cocked toward the right, blue mantle tied around waist and hips, and perforations indicative of stigmata through extended hands and feet and one laceration at chest. The narrative of this ex-voto is somewhat obscured. One can make out the date of September 15th; however, the year is blurred beyond the "19." Based upon the penmanship and painting styles, we believe it dates to the early 20th century. Despite the unclear text, the rich iconographic program of this piece, more than makes up for it! Size: 7-1/4" H x 5" W (18.4 cm x 12.7 cm).Ex-votos, are devotional paintings that bear a semblance to retablos, only they also include a written narrative offering thanks to a saint for coming to a family’s aid. The term is short for the Latin phrase ex voto suscepto meaning “from the vow made.” Oftentimes, gratitude is expressed for curing an ill child, expediting the recovery of an elderly family member, the safe return of a soldier, or the rescue of a victim from some horrific accident or crime. The petitioner dedicates a small painting with a brief written testimonial to a beloved patron saint for granting a miracle. These hand-written stories together with their expressive visual scenes can be quite touching and dramatic. Provenance: Ex-Historia Antiques, James Caswell, Santa Monica, CA Condition: Some wear, particularly to one side of the piece, obscuring the words. Europe, Franco-Flemish, ca. 15th century CE. In a word, wow! A stunning illuminated manuscript hand painted on vellum, depicting the Annunciation on one side, with text on the verso. The artist has elegantly captured this moment when the angel Gabriel told Mary, "You shall conceive and bear a son, and you shall give him the name Jesus." The painting is so fine and descriptive, one can almost hear Gabriel's surprising announcement. Gabriel kneels before the Virgin who sits in a prayerful gesture; Gabriel places his right hand over his heart, holds a sceptor in his left, while gazing at the Virgin Mary as rays of light project from his glorious wings, perhaps symbolizing the dove of the holy spirit. Both are framed within a lovely architectural setting of classical arches and columns. Did I mention how finely painted this piece is? Even so, it bears repeating, and just marvel at those jewel-tone hues! Brilliant! Size: illuminated manuscript itself measures 4-1/2" x 3-1/4" (11.4 x 8.3 cm); framed 10" L x 9" W (25.4 cm x 22.9 cm).Illumination was a complicated and costly process reserved for sacred books such as the bible as well as Books of Hours made in monasteries. According to Robert G. Calkins who wrote "Stages of Execution: Procedures of Illumination as Revealed in an Unfinished Book of Hours," (International Center of Medieval Art 17:1 (1978): 61-70), the text was written first, on vellum or parchment cut to the appropriate size. The pre-production preparation took much time. First, a silverpoint drawing of the design was executed. Burnished gold dots were next applied followed by the application of modulating colors. The previous three steps were repeated in addition to the outlining of marginal figures. Next, the penning of a rinceaux appearing in the border of a page, and finally, the marginal figures were painted. Beyond this was the preparation of pigments, and as you can see, the medieval artist's palette was quite extensive. This process demanded so many steps and layers of technique and artistry! Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1899 CE. An endearing retablo depicting a woman and child kneeling in prayer before a vision of Jesus Christ floating above surrounded by an orb of heavenly clouds in a rather spartanly furnished room. The text below generally translates, "In the year 1899, a horrible illness attacked a boy named Candido leaving him with very ugly marks upon his face and body, and having no earthly remedy, I invoked with great faith Our Father Jesus of the Sanctuary of Tecalpulco, and as a form of gratitude for his health dedicated this retablo." Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1925 CE. A beautifully composed ex-voto depicting three individuals offering thanks to Saint Anthony for curing the patriarch of the family. Saint Anthony is presented floating above them amidst billowing clouds in the traditional manner, donning his brown Franciscan habit and holding the Christ Child and a white lily. The text accompanying the visual generally translates, "I give thanks to Saint Anthony for granting me a miracle, for curing my father who became ill from a very dangerous illness. I invoked Saint Anthony with all my heart promising to share his miracle and now I fulfill my promise and give infinite thanks. Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1950 CE. A dramatic ex-voto painted on heavy gauge tin depicting what appears to be a family of seven praying to Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos (of the lakes) floating above them. To the right, the artist presents a tragic accident involving an open bed truck on a rural hillside. The driver apparently hit several individuals, probably children given their diminuitive scale. Despite the fact that the text is no longer legible, as they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words!" An antique Mexican ex-voto with a text written by an unfortunate gentleman who became ill in April of 1917, created to thank San Bernardino for granting him a miraculous cure. To the right is a vision of the crucified Christ. A small and quaint example of this religious folk art form.
