A PAIR OF GRISAILLE AND IRON-RED VASES DEPICTING ZHANG GUOLAO, REPUBLIC PERIOD 民國一對張果老長頸瓶Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 1912-1949. Each made from rather thin biscuit and with a baluster body surmounted by a long slender neck centered by a bowstring and rising to a subtly flared mouth with everted rim. Finely painted to depict Zhang Guolao atop a mule with a young attendant carrying his gourd vessel before a bridge in a snowy landscape with blossoming prunus and craggy rockwork. The base with an iron-red four-character mark Hongxian nianzhi. (2)Inscription: To each vase, ‘Qilu guo xiaoqiao, du tan meihua shou’ ([I] sit on a donkey, cross the bridge, and I marvel at the beauty of the plum blossoms).Provenance: From a German private collection.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, minimal firing irregularities, and few light scratches. Weight: 225.4 g and 204.3 gDimensions: Height 20.1 cm and 20 cm Yuan Shikai was the first President of the Republic of China and Emperor of the short-lived Empire of China (1915-1916), taking the era name Hongxian. In 1916, Guo Baochang, an antique dealer with a good relation to the court, was appointed to oversee Hongxian’s new imperial porcelain production. The intent from the outset was that the items produced were to be of excellent quality. The biscuit used was very thin, the enamels were sent from the Imperial Workshops and the mark used was a red seal reading Juren Tang zhi. The quality of items produced was reputed to be excellent. Unfortunately, during production, because of the very thin biscuit, many objects were damaged. The remaining few perfect pieces were given to the most favored officials and are exceedingly rare today.Yuan Shikai stepped down as Emperor on 22 March 1916 and resumed his presidency, dying shortly afterward in June 1916. After his death, production was halted and the kilns were destroyed, but the enamels were stolen by workers who then proceeded to copy the Juren Tang production, marking their pieces Hongxian nianzhi (also Hongxian Yu Chih or Hongxian Yuan Nian), mostly with Kaishu script. The first copies produced were apparently of extremely high quality, as they were still using the imperial biscuit and enamels, but quality fell as the quantity increased and, presumably, the imperial resources were depleted. One opinion has it that all Hongxian marked pieces are made after the actual period, and that the only possibly genuine mark of the Hongxian period is the Juren Tang if any. Still, from extant pieces it is clear the porcelain industry was much stimulated at this time and for decades to come, and that pieces of very high quality were made, some of which bear the Hongxian mark while others are marked Juren Tang.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie’s New York, 15 September 2011, lot 1642Price: USD 12,500 or approx. (2)Peaches are perhaps China’s most auspicious fruit, having a long tradition as omens of longevity and harbingers of happiness, and flowering peach branches are believed to ward off evil. In the Shi Jing [Classic of Poetry], the oldest existing collection of Chinese poetry, edited by Confucius (551-479 BC), the peach is used as a metaphor for thriving marriage and family. The poet Tao Qian (365-427) tells of a fisherman who, when following the source of a stream in a peach orchard – 'Peach Blossom Spring' – through a crevice in a rock, discovered a paradisiacal world. A peach orchard is also the setting for the oath of brotherhood sworn by the three main protagonists of the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, one of whom, the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) general Guan Yu, was deified and worshipped as Emperor Guan or God of War for near two millennia. The ‘peaches of immortality’, which are said to grow in the garden of Xi Wangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, flower only once every three thousand years, take three thousand years to bear fruit and another three thousand years to ripen, and are then offered in a banquet to the immortals. Dongfang Shuo, a witty and clever Han dynasty scholar, who became the hero of many legends, is reported to have stolen peaches of immortality and thus to have become immortal. And the same feat is told of the mischievous Monkey King Sun Wukong, hero of the novel Journey to the West, who subsequently was recruited by Guanyin (Bodhisattva of Compassion) to accompany the Tang dynasty (618-907) monk Xuanzang on his trip to India to obtain Buddhist sutras.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby’s New York, 24 June 2020, lot 801Price: USD 30,000 or approx. These tests found that the bronze fitting of the largest belt plaque was made from a tin-lead-bronze alloy in which no modern components of any kind could be detected. Conversely, it was also found that the sample contains trace elements that are typical of ancient metal alloys. The report concludes that the tests found absolutely no evidence of modern manufacture of the present lot. A copy of the examination report, no. 16-024, dated 25 February 2016, accompanies this lot.Weight: 747 g (total) Dimensions: Size 8.5 x 4.2 cm (the largest) and 4 x 3 cm (the smallest) With a silk storage box. (13)Khotan in the Tarim basin had rich jade stores during the Tang dynasty. The jade was fashioned into ornaments such as women’s comb tops and decorative plaques for belts worn by senior officials. Lot 66

AN IMPORTANT YELLOW JADE ‘DOUBLE-BEAR’ ORNAMENTAL SEAL AND RITUAL PLAQUE, SPRING AND AUTUMN PERIOD, CHINA, CIRCA 770 TO 481 BCPlease note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Expert’s note: This exceptional jade plaque, distinguished by its remarkable preservation and rarity, encompasses the craftsmanship styles of both the Shang and Zhou dynasties, as aptly noted by Harry Geoffrey Beasley in his commentary on this artwork a century ago (refer to provenance section below). It stands as an extraordinary testament to the legacy of the Spring and Autumn era. With a prestigious history, it was initially held in the esteemed collection of Henry Dyer, a renowned engineer and collector from Glasgow, Scotland, who was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by Emperor Meiji. Subsequently, it found its place in the museum of Harry Geoffrey Beasley before eventually becoming part of the family collection of Alfred William Cowperthwaite in 1939. In terms of quality and condition, this jade plaque ranks alongside the finest surviving archaic jades in the rich history of ancient China. The accompanying written note by Harry Geoffrey Beasley describes the present jade as a "Display Plaque" that combines designs from “the Shang and Zhou” dynasties. He emphasizes its uniqueness and significance by stating, "Unique and of extreme importance. Ex: Dyer Collection." A copy of this note, along with the presentation box in which it was discovered, is included with this lot. Please refer to the provenance section below for more details. The plaque is entirely flat and exhibits meticulous carvings on both sides, portraying two crouching bears positioned back to back. These bears are intricately rendered with emphasized facial features and paws, all finely incised in deep and high relief. Additionally, the plaque is adorned with two stylized dragons on the back of each bear, accompanied by skillfully executed geometric designs. These designs are masterfully crafted using adjacent double- and single-line grooves, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the piece. The absence of any drilled holes or natural openings that would allow suspension leaves no doubt that this plaque was not intended to be worn merely as a piece of jewelry or an ornamental item, neither during one's lifetime nor in the afterlife. Instead, it was specifically crafted as a ceremonial centerpiece, likely revered and utilized in rituals spanning generations. It probably also served as a seal plaque and was ultimately interred alongside a significant noble leader. The substantial size of 12.8 cm further supports this evaluation. The translucent stone is of a beautiful pale yellow tone with faint green hues and a few distinct russet spots. Calcification throughout.Provenance: -Henry Dyer (1848-1918), according to a copy of a handwritten note written by Harry Geoffrey Beasley found inside a presentation box, which was custom made for the present lot by the orders of Alfred William Cowperthwaite. Most likely acquired by Henry Dyer during his stay in Japan from 1873 to 1882, where he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, the highest Japanese honor available to foreigners, by the Emperor Meiji.-Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939), acquired from the above, probably after Dyer’s death in 1918. -Irene Beasley, widow of Harry Geoffrey Beasley, by descent in 1939. -Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964), acquired from the above in 1939 or shortly thereafter.-Thence by descent within the Cowperthwaite family to the last owner.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, minuscule nibbling, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, all consistent with an extensive time of burial. Calcification throughout.Weight: 54.9 gDimensions: Length 12.1 cm With an old presentation box and glass cover. (2) Due to length restriction on the platform, this entry is shortened.
