Islamic Coins Umayyad Copper Token issued by al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf to the value of six mithqals obv: bism allah a / mr al-amir al-hajja / j bin yusuf / bi‘l-wafa hadha / mizan sitta rev two rows of three dots waf across centre 2.38g (unrecorded but see Walker for a coin weight in the British Museum with similar obverse legends but reverse bism allah / ‘adl between the two lines of three dots weight 25.14g). Virtually extremely fine and of the highest rarity. This remarkable piece forms part of the currency reform introduced by ‘Abd al-Malik b. Marwan and al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf in the middle of the 70s h. The British Museum specimen appears to be an actual coin weight for six mithqals the six dots on the reverse being placed there for the benefit of the illiterate. This piece however is a token to be exchanged for a measure of six whether of mithqals or dirhams is unclear but certainly well known to the original holders. It appears likely that these pieces were used in conjunction with one another the British Museum weight to receive metal from the public and the token to be given to a recipient to redeem for coin at an issuing office. The inscriptions bear this out. On the obverse both read “In the name of God the Amir al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf ordered honesty this is the measure of six”. The reverse of the weight reads “in the name of God just (weight) and the reverse of the token “redemption’ or “payment in full.” The token was engraved by hand as only a small number would have been needed to facilitate the transactions of the mint in receiving old and issuing new coin to the public.
