A rare Bing clockwork Somersaulting Teddy Bear, circa 1910, dark cinnamon mohair bear with black boot button eyes, stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head and jointed at shoulders and hips, felt pads, wearing metal collar, mechanism to body and arms with metal rods ending in hooks, with original wooden frame with chains, clockwork mechanism activated by winding the bears arms back, generally good condition some wear to mohair, some sparse areas and couple bald patches to chest, some small holes to pads, tear/repair to left side of body, bear 14” (35.5cm) tall. The Bing Somersaulting Bear was the subject of a lawsuit by Steiff that claimed this bear copied their 1909 ‘Purzel-Bar’ the lawsuit continued from 1911 to 1915 when Bing ceased making the bear. This bear features in The Teddy Bear Encyclopedia by Pauline Cockrill pg.35 top right.

An interesting Nodding Advertising Teddy Bear for Maynards Wine Gums, German 1952, golden mohair covered bear with inserted brown glass eyes, moulded plastic nose and hinged lower jaw with moulded tongue, weighted nodding head, jointed at shoulders, felt pads, holding a wicker basket, mounted on red wooden base, opening flap to back, nodding mechanism operated by electric motor (detached), generally very good condition, 26 ¾” (68cm) high including base.

Early ‘Bear With Me! Teddy the life-long friend of Rosamond Ellis Scott, with provenance, German 1912, the golden mohair bear with black boot button eyes, stitched nose, mouth and claws, fully jointed, and with replaced felt paw pads, mohair very worn, some holes to muzzle and cheek, 12” (30cm) tall, this bear was bought for Rosamond Ellis Scott as a Christmas present in 1912 and stayed with as her constant companion on her many travels around the world including Paris and China, her story is re-told by her friends in the book that accompanies this bear, together with his suitcase. The bear was giving to the museum in 1994.

A rare rolling eyed golden mohair Teddy Bear by Carl Harmus, German 1913-15, the long mohair bear with inserted moveable eyes, clipped muzzle, stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head and jointed at shoulders and hips, felt pads and squeaker, generally very good condition, some minor sparse areas, balding to lower back of left leg, 13” (33cm) tall. In 1913 Carl Harmus of Sonneberg registered: DRGM 5832 256: Plush bear stuffed with soft material with moveable shaking eyes.
