The Stock Exchange. Whistler (Reginald John, 'Rex'), The Stock Exchange London 1933, London: The Financial News, 1933, colour photolithograph, additional cartouche with the title 'The Financial News map of the Stock Exchange' with a table of explanation below, numerous allegorical symbols and figures surrounding the map, slight spotting, very slight surface abrasion, laid on later card, 390 x 535 mmQTY: (1)NOTE:A scarce map crammed with allegorical symbolism. The cartouche is supported by a bear and a bull, the classic representations of a sellers and buyers market, and both are shown in morning dress. The secondary cartouche is flanked by King Midas who has coins spilling from his waist and Dame Fortune who is blindfolded and holding a pair of scissors and whose arm rests on the 'rota fortunae' or wheel of fortune, a symbol of the capricious nature of fate. In the upper corners of the map are representations of Mercury carrying an elaborate compass and the goddess Demeter spilling her cornucopia into the market. The stock exchange itself is shown as a castellated courtyard within whose walls commodities, gilts and bonds are depicted being traded by a variety of humorous vignettes.

Benson Jowitt for their generosity in supplying me with excellent specimens, many of which were gathered by the latter gentleman to bear his initials and the locality from whence they were taken by him'.Robert Benson Jowitt (1839-1914) was a life governor of Yorkshire College and part of the Robert Jowitt wool merchants' enterprise. Arthur Paine Baines (1848-1918) who assembled the collection was his brother-in-law, having married Jowitt's sister Florence in 1889. Francesco Celebrano, Italian 1729-1814- The Personification of Sight; and The Personification of Smell; oils on panel, each bear handwritten label 'BRUNARD' on the reverse, each 65.5 x 42 cm., a pair (2). Provenance: An important Private Collection, UK. Note: We are grateful to Professor Nicola Spinosa for confirming the attribution of the present lot. Neapolitan painter and sculptor Francesco Celebrano was royal painter to the court of King Ferdinand IV of Naples (1751-1825). Nicola Spinosa dates the present works to the artist's early maturity, between 1770 and 1775. Indeed, their elegance, colour and form are typical of his compositions, with the latter especially noticeable here in the treatment of the figures' overtly muscular arms and legs. It is likely that three other related panels - depicting the other senses of touch, taste, and hearing - exist. For particularly close comparison, notably of the central figures and putti, see the pair of allegories in oil which appeared at Christie's, New York, 3 June 2015, lot 34. For more information on Celebrano, see N. Spinosa, 'Pittura napoletana del Settecento dal Rococò al Classicismo', Naples, 1993.
