Boer War / WW1 18th Hussars Military Medal Officer’s Group of Seven Medals. A good long service gallantry group awarded to Lieutenant Bertram Bear, who had served in the ranks of the 18th Hussars, before being commissioned into the East Yorkshire Regiment and then transferring to the RAF. Comprising: Military Medal “4855 Sjt B Bear 18/ Hrs”, Queen’s South Africa Medal, five clasps “Cape Colony”, “Orange Free State”, “South Africa 1901”, “South Africa 1902”. “4855 L.Corp 18th Hussars”, 1914 Star, with clasp “4855 Sjt 8/HRS”, British War Medal, Victory Medal “2 Lieut.”, Defence Medal, Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (GVR Field Marshal bust), “4855 Sq.S.Mjr 18th Hrs”. GC mounted for display. The announcement of the Military Medal appeared in the London Gazette on the 11th October 1916. It is interesting to note that this listing was for a number of retrospective awards, many won during 1914, 1915. The cavalry awards are often for bravery during scouting and reconnaissance operations. Lt Bear’s serving during the Boer War is confirmed, he landed in France with his regiment on the 15th August 1914 and was discharged for a commission and was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Bn East Yorkshire Regiment. In December 1917 he was attached to the 10th Bn KOYLI and during March 1918 he was wounded and appears to have been invalided by to UK, where he later transferred to the Royal Air Force.

Lot 448

WW2 10th Royal Hussars, outstanding Tank Commanders Military Medal Group of Six Medals. Awarded to Sergeant John Heaton, who served with the Regiment during the ill-fated campaign in France 1940 to the final victory in 1945 and was engaged in every major engagement of the Regiment. Comprising: Military Medal, “7901244 L Sjt J Heaton 10 H”, 1939/45 Star, Africa Star, clasp 8th “Army”, Italy Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, MID Oak Leaf. GC. The two page typed recommendation was raised on the 21st June 1945. “On September 6th 1944 Sgt Heaton was commanding a tank and his Troop were supporting the infantry in the attack on San Savino. The village was strongly held and many Bazooka men were hidden in the outskirts. In spite of the fact that the two remaining tanks of his Troop had been knocked out, Sgt Heaton continued to press forward, doing great execution among the enemy and gaining valuable information for our own infantry. By his determination and gallantry he greatly assisted the infantry to gain their objective. Later the same day, Sgt Heaton rescued two seriously wounded men from his Troop-Corporal’s tank although subjected to very heavy and accurate enemy shelling. On the 21st April 1945, Sgt Heaton was commanding a tank in a Troop which was supporting an attack on Motesanto by a Company of the Royal Irish Fusiliers. The ground was very open, but in places interspersed with thick cover and buildings which gave the enemy excellent opportunities for concealment of anti-tank guns, with ideal fields of fire. Any concealed approaches to the enemy position which could be used by our tanks were accurately registered by large calibre guns. The attack by the Company started at 1400 yds from its finial objective. As soon as the attack started and Sgt Heaton moved forward from cover he was fired at by an undetected anti-tank gun from about 1500 yards to his flank. At the same time two Spandaus opened on the infantry from the front. It would have been easy for Sgt Heaton to have faced his tank to the anti-tank gun, thereby presenting his thickest armour and bring all guns to bear. In order to keep moving with and to support the infantry, he deliberately left his flank exposed to the anti-tank gun and ordered his hull browning to keep up continuos fire on the Spandaus which were causing casualties and 2” smoke mortar to fire on the area of the anti-tank gun. He continued to advance in this manner up to the objective, where he ran over the Spandau post in spite of the fact that the S.P. fired 6 shots at his tank during his 1,400 yds advance, but these were made inaccurate by Sgt Heaton’s counter-fire and his skilful use of ground and fire. There is no doubt that his gallantry enabled the Company to gain their objective which was essential for the final break through of an armoured formation which subsequently completed its mission successfully. Sgt Heaton has fought in every action the Regiment has taken part in since the outbreak of the war, in France, Africa and Italy and he has always shown outstanding gallantry in the face of the enemy.” This is probably one of the longest recommendation for a very well deserved and long overdue Gallantry Award.

Peter Collinson (1694-1768) was a gardener and natural scientist, particularly known for his correspondence with Benjamin Franklin concerning electricity.Collinson provides a lengthy biographical notice of his friend Lumley Lloyd to the front endpapers of the first volume, ‘These books of the Hortus Malabaricus was the Legacy of my Dear Friend Docr. Lumley Lloyd D.D. of Cheam in Surry ... he was from his youth a great Lover of Flowers & Rare Plants, he told mee when he was a young studient at Cambridge about the year 1686 that he purchased from Holland three or four seeds of the Narsturtium Indicum ... at half a crown each, being then a great rarity for it came from India but two years before, he was so impatient to see it flower that he would not stirr out of Doors least it should Blow in his Absence. He well remembered and could name all the striped flowers Auriculas that was to purchased when he was a Lad att the 12 or 14th year of his age ... He told mee a long detail of the Gardners he purchased them off & that he valued no brick for a new flower - he told mee the original or mother of all the fine Auriculas that was then in being was Raised from the Seed of an Auricula named Blinds: Cream after the name of a Gardner at Mortlack that first produced it from seed, it was a flower that had good properties and was in request in my memory, but now anno 1746 I question if it is allowed a place in the pott or is to be found; Mr. Potter, Gardner at Micham had the greatest success in raising surprising fine Flowers from Seed with whome the Docr. laid out considerably every year notwithstanding he raised great many every year ... He with Mr. Potter’s assistance raised annually an infinite variety of most charming flowers & tulips he had almost without number produced from seed & breeders. So great was his love for this flower, of which he had the finest I ever saw in any collection - that he had two long and high iron frames which inclosed Two Beds Each, with a Walk in the Middle, this was all Coverd with Canvas to screen the Tulips from the Sun, it was very agreeable viewing them in the Heat of the day under this shade. These Two Iron Frames cost Eighty Pounds - all the Ranunculas & Anemony Beds had Lower Wood Frames & Canvas coverings. He spared No Expence to prolong His Favourite Flowers… My Valuable Friend was for greatest part of his Life sadly affected with the Gout, but when he could no longer bear being wheeld about his Garden in a Little Coach, so great was his Love for his darling amusement, he had his plants & flowers brought into his Library which was finely ornamented with them’.
