A LARGE EARLY 20TH CENTURY STEIFF TEDDY BEAR, mohair plush, centre seam, pointed snout, swivel head, pronounced humped back, jointed long limbs, black stitched nose and mouth, in the ear a metal 'STEIFF' button, with internal growler (not working) circa 1910. He is 16" high (seated) and 23.5" high (fully stretched) Originally owned by Edna Jackman of New Milton, pictured with him as a two year old in the early 1900s This kind and generous bear was previously sold by Mrs Jackman's husband on behalf of the Oakhaven Hospice in 1992 for £4,600. He is now being sold by the kind purchaser on behalf of the 'Dorset Blind Association' as it is time he found a new home! Probably the most famous of all teddies, the first Steiff bear was created in 1902 by Richard Steiff working for his aunt's toy company in Germany. The basic design with jointed arms and legs has been the template for all Steiff bears since then. In 1903, Richard Steiff took his bear to the Leipzig Toy Fair and there was discovered by an American business man who placed an order for 3,000 bears. They have been called "Teddy Bears" since 1906, after President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. The trademark Steiff Button in the ear was introduced in 1908 to identify them from cheap imitations.

Fine Pre WW1 Imperial German Naval Photograph Album of China, Japan and Pacific Islands Interest, wonderful album detailing the career of a sailors service with the SMS Scharnhorst in the far east just prior to the outbreak of WW1. The album starts with a wide image of the sailors ship, then an image of the SS Konigin Luise which was sunk in 1914. Album continues with high detailed images of topographical interest in the Far east, clear images taken in the German occupied Tsingtao, China. Many images of life at sea with good clear images of other ships, crew members, Chinese national in German naval uniform. Very good image of a group of German sailors from the SMS Scharnhorst feeding milk to a baby Bear. Images of people of oriental origin in national dress, monuments, palaces, punishment of Chinese river pirates, Japanese Geisha girls, Japanese Samurai, etc. Towards the end of the album are images taken in the Pacific Islands with similar type images as taken in China and Japan etc. A few loose images of which a couple appear to be of a later period. Images all contained in an original Japanese lacquered photograph album of the period. (133 images) The SMS Scharnhorst was an Armoured Cruiser of the Imperial German Navy. She was built at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. She was commissioned into service on 24th October 1907. In 1909 she was assigned to the German East Asia Squadron and sailed for the German port of Tsingtao. The Scharnhorst replaced the Bismarck as the flagship of the Squadron. On her way to Tsingtao the ship stopped at Columbo and then Hong Kong. Whilst part of the East Asia Squadron she sailed on many trips around the various ports and the pacific colonies including German Samoa. After the outbreak of WW1 the Scharnhorst was involved in the successful Battle of Coronel before being sunk at the battle of Falkland Islands on 8th December 1914.
MURDOCH IRIS: (1919-1999) Irish-born Writer and Philosopher. A.L.S., Iris Murdoch, two pages, 8vo, Steeple Aston, Oxford, 15th November n.y., to [Neville] Braybrooke. Murdoch thanks her correspondent for their letter and interesting suggestion and continues 'Inspired by it, I made a search for some early poetry which I haven't seen for years, but could find nothing! I fear I may have destroyed all my early efforts', further remarking 'If anything turns up in the near future (& if I feel I could bear its publication, which is doubtful) I'll let you know'. Together with a second A.L.S., Iris Murdoch, on one side of a plain postcard, St. Anne's College, Oxford, n.d. (16th July 1961), also to Neville Braybrooke. Murdoch thanks her correspondent for having sent her a copy of The Idler and remarks 'I have started reading it & with great pleasure!' Hand addressed by Murdoch to the verso. Also including a third A.L.S., Iris, two pages, 8vo, Hamilton Road, Oxford, 7th November n.y., also to Neville [Braybrooke]. Murdoch informs her correspondent 'I much enjoyed visiting your local shop, a real second hand bookshop! There aren't so many now' and further writes 'I think I can't provide a juvenile contribution - I haven't any suitable archives and have only (for another request) found in a school magazine a poem so terrible that I would rather burn it!' Some very light age wear and creasing, predominantly to the first letter which also has a small, neat split to the edge of one fold, not affecting the text or signature. G to VG, 3 Neville Braybrooke (1923-2001) English Poet, Writer, Editor, Literary Critic and Publisher. Son of Patrick Braybrooke (1894-1956) English Literary Critic. Two of the present letters were written in response to Neville Braybrooke's research, which extended over some thirty years, into an anthology of juvenilia by writers who would later become famous. The book was published with the title of Seeds in the Wind: Early Signs of Genius in 1989.
