De Thou binding.- Cato (Marcus Porcius) De Agricultura, sive de re rustica, liber, collation: A6 A-L8 B-F8 G2 (without the second A1 as per the copy cited by Adams at Jesus College, Cambridge), small woodcut device on title, lightly browned, bound in 17th century sheep dyed with an overall pattern of partly shaded rosettes for Jacques de Thou, with gilt arms of him and his first wife to covers, spine gilt in compartments with the couple's repeated monogram 'IAM', head of spine slightly chipped, exposing headband, otherwise in excellent condition, 8vo (163 x 97mm., binding 167 x 105mm.), Leiden, Ex Officina Plantiniana, 1598.⁂ An exceedingly rare example of a stencilled binding executed for the great 17th-century French collector Jacques-Auguste de Thou, printed and pochoir-coloured with a design of flower petals. The covers bear his gilt arms including those of his first wife Marie de Barbancon-Cany. These bindings form a separate group in the highly notable library ammassed by de Thou, which comprised 6,000 volumes. Antoine Coron states that only about 25 bindings stencilled with flowers are known, mainly appearing in celebrated auctions (e.g. Abbey 19-21 June 1967, lot 1743; Esmerian 6 June 1972, lot 115; Van der Elst 5 June 2002, lot 33; Wittock 7 July 2004, lot 6), and generally housing works by classical authors, as here. These bindings mostly show the arms of de Thou and his second wife Gasparde de la Chastre on the covers, and were executed by an unknown Parisian atelier between 1602, the wedding year, and his death in 1617. Among these stencilled bindings Coron lists only a single volume stamped with de Thou's arms impaling those of his first wife Marie de Barbancon-Cany, who died in 1601: "Aux environs de 1600 apparaissent sur ses rayons les premières reliures ornées de fleurs imprimées. La plus ancienne de la série, sur un Hippocrate de 1587, est la seule que je connaisse qui ne soit pas en maroquin. Cest la seule également au chiffre de Thou-Barbançon, donc antérieure à 1602 (A. Coron, "'Ut Prosint aliis': Jacques-Auguste de Thou et sa bibliothèque", p. 121). The Rothamsted example is also in exceptionally fine condition.Provenance: Jacques-August de Thou (armorial binding; see Catalogus Bibliothecae Thuanae, Paris 1679, vol. II, p. 337,"[M. Catonis] de Agricultura editio Meursii post A. Popma editionem emendatior. 8°. Ɵ Compendium of English and Welsh armorial material, including an account of the right and title of Thomas Fane of Kent to the barony of Abergavenny, and a discussion of historical baronies and earldoms of England, with their coats-of-arms, in Tudor English, illustrated manuscript on paper [England (probably Kent), and perhaps in part Wales (Abergavenny), last third of sixteenth century] 203 leaves (plus 2 nineteenth-century blue paper endleaves at each end), complete, formed of two separate units bound together (see below), the first part with single column of c. 37 lines in a fine Tudor English hand, titles and opening words in larger calligraphic script, lines of descent in roundels joined by penwork, coats-of-arms mostly painted in colours (over 570 of these), some spots, stains and tears, else in good and presentable condition, 310 by 205mm. and 298 by 200mm.; nineteenth-century English green marbled paper boards with parchment spine and corners Provenance:1. Sir Thomas Fane of Kent (c. 1510-1589), Tudor landowner and High Sheriff, whose family lived on estates in Kent bought with the proceeds of ransoms received for catching and imprisoning King John II of France at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. The first part of this volume was almost certainly commissioned by him as part of his establishment of his right to bear the title of the Baron of Abergavenny. He inherited it through his second wife, Mary Nevill (they married in 1574), one of the greatest Tudor heiresses and herself the Baroness le Despenser, and daughter of Sir Henry Nevill, 4th Lord Abergavenny. However, the title seems to have been disputed and he does not appear to have used it, and after his death it was claimed (probably falsely) by one of his wife’s relatives named Edward Nevill.2. Sir George Nayler (1764-1831), FSA., Clarenceaux King of Arms from 1820 and Garter King of Arms from 1822; his printed armorial bookplate on front pastedown. By this time the two parts seem to have been bound together.3. Thomas Thorpe, bookdealer of London, his cat. for 1836, no. 57 (with pencil marks of this last number and the price “21£” inside front board.4. Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), his MS 8808 (written in his hand in pencil on front pastedown and with his distinctive paper label on spine); passing by descent through his family until sold to the Robinson brothers (see lot 79); sold by them in 1980 as part of the remnant of the collection after several decades of sales at Sotheby’s, to H.P. Kraus of New York, his cat. 157.5. The Schøyen Collection, Oslo and London, their MS 556, acquired directly from Kraus, and exported to Norway some decades ago.Text:This is an excellent example of a Tudor manuscript, entirely in English, and focussed on two subjects of great interest to the nobility of the period: titles and arms. It opens with “The right and title of Sr Thomas Fane of Kent to the name, stile and dignitie of Lord of Bergauenny” (Abergavenny), and this is an account of the baronies by Writ and Precedents from 1392 to 1589 in support of this claim (fols. 1-42). This is preceded by a single sheet index of the nineteenth century and a fragment of the original title page (this laid down on the first leaf). After lengthy introductory texts on the barony of Abergavenny, this work is arranged as a series of diagrams of each family, with lines of descent traced in roundels connected by simple penwork lines. This part of the compendium ends with some 36 foliated leaves, also with a nineteenth-century index added at front (2 leaves). This is identified in Sir Thomas Phillipps’ hand in pencil as “The Extinct Baronye of Engd & Wales from the dayes of King Stephen to Hen. 6th by an unknown hand”, and contains a lengthy catalogue of baronies in the same form as before, with occasional annotations in seventeenth-century script. The compendium ends with a volume of shorter dimensions, recording the imagined arms of the kings of the Britons, “Romayns”, Saxon and “Danishe” rulers as well as early Norman rulers sketched in plummet, before 116 numbered pages of coloured arms of noblemen from the reign of each king from William the Conqueror to Queen Elizabeth; this then extended up to James I. Some of these arms are painted on separate pieces of paper and pasted down, and some text is pasted in same form over the top of earlier entries.
