Martha Gellhorn (1908-1998), American journalist and novelist, considered one of the 20th century's greatest war correspondents, third wife of Ernest Hemingway. An archive of autograph letters, photographs and ephemera sent by Martha Gellhorn to Andrew Tarnowski, a captain in the Carpathian Lancers, with whom she formed a friendship in Italy while working as a war correspondent. The archive comprises four typed letters signed; five signed & inscribed postcards; four signed & inscribed Christmas cards; two U.S. War Correspondent badges; an original photograph depicting Martha Gellhorn with Andrew Tarnowski in Italy during WW2, and a Polish edition of The Carpathian Lancers, 1966, in which the photograph is published. One of the letters is critical of the Vietnam war, 'We are behaving, in Vietnam, like the Nazi army in Poland; I don't believe for a minute in this "Communist aggression" talk (I always remember how the Nazis were going to save the world from Bolshevism too); it is the ugliest power politics, as mad as it is wicked, and we are killing the Vietnamese as if they were non-people, and an enormous number of poor conscripted young Americans are pointlessly dying too in this murder operation...My one hope is that we get a decent President in 1968, but we may not even have a choice beyond the idiocy of Johnson and Nixon. Unfortunately the whole world suffers for the wicked stupidities of our government.'One of letters gives a moving insight into the difficulties of continuing work as a war correspondent while raising a precious child, 'Journalism is hell now for me, because I can't bear being away from Sandy, who grows and changes every day; and I feel cheated to miss any of his baby years. He is too beautiful and funny and charming to be described, and now he talks too, some English, more Spanish, in a sweet soft voice like a dove...I do not believe any other thing in the world matters, except to love another human being and look after that one...Here in Mexico, no one talks or seems to think about War Number Three, which is a lovely state of affairs. I don't think about it either because I refuse to. I live as if life were going to last forever and go quietly and peacefully through my days, playing with the child, managing the house and doing my writing; and I read no newspapers and never listen to the radio, since I mean to be happy as long as I can and not torment myself in advance with the thought of chaos...This trip was not for pleasure, it was only to get enough money, as fast as possible, to feed us for another year...I came back here so tired I slept for a week.'In another letter, she states, 'Year after year, men go on killing each other, fighting wars which are certainly as pointless and insane as the Wars of the Roses....Dearest Andrew, no one really wins in this life but some of us win something. You've won that lovely warm thing of loving your child and surely of being loved by her. It's a big something. The older I get, the more sure I am that love alone matters.'Provenance: By descent of Andrew Tarnowski

Enrie, Giuseppe -- "Santo volto del Divin Redentore" (Detail of the Shroud of Turin - negative). 1931. Vintage gelatin silver print. 29 x 23 cm. Photographer's and reproduction limitation blindstamp in lower left/right corners, mounted to original board (corners bumped, small loss in upper left corner), with title and date printed above/below the image on the mount (41,5 x 31,5 cm).The Shroud of Turin is believed to bear the imprint of the face and wounds of Christ. The first historical record of the Shroud goes back to the 15th century when it was given to the House of Savoy by a French noblewoman. Since the 17th century, it has been housed in a chapel connected to Turin’s cathedral. The first photograph of the Shroud was made during its public display in 1898 by the amateur photographer Secondo Pia. Because that photograph was produced with the Shroud under its protective glass, its use as evidence was increasingly questioned. Thus, when the Shroud was displayed publicly in 1931, in honor of the wedding of Umberto II to the Belgian princess Maria José, a new set of photographs was commissioned.Accompanied by a French scientist, a priest and Secondo Pia, Enrie made twelve negatives of the Shroud. He recorded his methodology in great detail, which was published in 1933. Enrie’s photographs of the Shroud were widely distributed. The print offered here includes its original mount, which features printed signatures and insignia of church officials, attesting to the official sanction of the image. – A few scuff/scratch marks in upper left as well as light silvering in edges, more visible at an angle, one stronger dent to left of face, retouched spot in upper right corner, otherwise in very good condition.Lit.: Maria Bugli/Cristina Gardini. Fotografia Italian dell Ottocento, Milan 1979, ill. p. 118.

JOHN FREDERICK HERRING (BRITISH 1795-1865)ROBERT JOHNSON ON MR. RIDDELL'S DR. SYNTAXOil on canvasSigned (lower left)38.5 x 49.5cm (15 x 19¼ in.)A larger version, dated 1825, sold at Christie's, London, 8 May 2009, lot 100 (£45,000 hammer price)Dr. Syntax, a brown colt foaled in 1811 by Paynator out of a mare by Beningborough, was bred by Humphrey Osbaldeston of Hunmanby, Yorkshire, and sold as a yearling to Mr. Knapton of Huntington, near York, and subsequently to Ralph Riddell of Felton Park, Northumberland.Dr. Syntax began racing in 1814 in the colours of Ralph Riddell and ran for ten seasons until 1823. His many victories included a sequence of seven in the Preston Gold Cup from 1815 to 1821, the only example known of a horse winning the same race for more than six seasons. Dr. Syntax also won thirteen other Gold Cups, including the Lancaster Cup five times, and thirty five races in all. The Druid wrote of Dr. Syntax 'The Doctor, as they so fondly termed him in the North, was in every way a very remarkable horse to look at, being barely fifteen hands high, very broad at the base of the nose, with an eye as full and bright as a hawks, a high drooping rump and short quarters. He was very short in his coat which was mouse-coloured. A slight canter would bring out his veins so strongly that he looked as if covered by network. He had splendid legs and a strong muscular head; but could never bear either whip or spur, but Bob Johnson (his jockey) could always get every ounce out of him by merely stroking and talking to him'.Condition Report: The canvas has been lined and re-varnished. Craquelure throughout. Some of which has been in-filled and this is visible in a natural light. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching throughout. Condition Report Disclaimer
