A large and early Steiff display teddy bear, mohair plush, centre seam, pointed snout, swivel head, wood wool stuffing, pronounced humped back, jointed long limbs, black stitched nose and mouth, boot button eyes, in the ear a blank nickel-plated button, circa 1906, 115cm (45in) high provenance: Given in about 1915, when already second-hand, to the vendors grandmother, a nursing auxiliary at Netley Hospital, by a wounded soldier in her care. Inherited on her death by her daughter and later by her grand-daughter, whose letter of provenance reads: My mother grew up with him and so did I. He has been a companion, a hiding place, a member of the family and a friend.... I cannot remember a time when Mr Bear was not around and he will be sorely missed.
A Richard overlaid glass slender baluster vase, in amethyst over salmon pink etched with slipper orchids, signed 'Richard', 30cm high. Richard was a retail outlet in Paris owned by Edmond Etling (see 'Le Genie Verrier De L'Europe' by Cappa, p. 368). From 1926 to 1929 Loetz was commissioned to produce a number of overlaid vases with etched decors which would bear different signatures at the customer's request
