Lot 551

Embroidered panel. A large and important redwork panel, British, circa 1620, embroidered in very fine wool thread dyed with cochineal beetle red, on a cream twilled fustian ground, with all-over pattern of flora and fauna, the former comprising: pomegranates, magnolia flowers, daffodils, harebells, aquilegia, lilies, and the latter: leopards, parrots, stags, squirrels, hounds, hares, and an elephant carrying a three-turreted castle on its back, fine line border to long sides, the outlines worked in stem stitch, with details in seeding, back, running, and lazy daisy stitches, 2 hand-stitched vertical joins with imagery continuous (each of the 3 widths approximately 49cm), hand-stitched horizontal join 35cm up from lower edge (embroidery not continuous), side and lower edges bound with linen tape (that to left hand edge largely frayed), neatly stitch-mounted to a double layer cream backing, with velcro along top edge, some loss to embroidery and consequently pencil outlines visible in places, but stitching largely intact (although renewed in 1 or 2 small areas with pale brown thread), occasional small marks and some perishing of fustian ground (with stitched areas of consolidation), 2 areas of embroidery carefully cut round and re-mounted on new backing (approximately 23 x 9cm and 59 x 16cm), overall size 216 x 149cm (85 x 58.5ins)Qty: (1)Footnote: Provenance: Private Collection.Exhibited: Royal School of Needlework Exhibition, Irish Linen Centre in Lisburn Museum, May 2009-May 2010. The piece has also been displayed at the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace on a number of occasions.Redwork embroidery of the early 17th century is rarely offered for sale even in small fragments, and therefore the importance of this large-scale piece - new to the market - cannot be overstated. Redwork typically features detached but lively motifs regularly spaced in an organised design over a white linen or cotton ground, and was usually carried out by women who used it to decorate domestic furnishings such as bedcovers and hangings, cushions, workbags and curtains, as well as articles of dress. This substantial piece of embroidery, and its two companion pieces (see following lot) are likely to have been originally part of a set of bed hangings. Elaborate hand-work was treasured and handed down, and these pieces may have been modified in the 17th or 18th century in order to repurpose and infuse new life into them. Certainly they were subjected to a quite radical alteration, perhaps by a prudish Victorian owner, when the appendages protruding from the dogs were unstitched, in order to protect the sensibilities of the viewer! The outlines of tiny holes where the needle went through the fabric are still clearly visible, testament to a fascinating tale in the history of this panel. The broadly, but not perfectly, repeating design depicts stylised fruit and flowers, mostly of similar size, and a variety of beasts whose dimensions bear no relation to each other. This lack of proportional scale and freedom of distribution of motifs is typical of other work of the time. Both domestic and professional embroiderers took inspiration from pattern books, such as Richard Schorleyker's A Schole-House for the Needle published in 1624, although other publications such as emblem books, herbals, illuminated manuscripts and bestiaries would also have provided imagery which could be copied or modified for transfer onto cloth. Thus the variation found within the all-encompassing term of 'redwork' is wide, each piece reflecting the individuality of the stitcher. The lone elephant shown to the lower left of the panel is an unusual, and therefore unexpected, inclusion, although the elephant and castle motif was widely known at the time. Indeed, in the mid-14th century the symbol was included on the coat of arms of the city of Coventry. The elephant is associated with a number of attributes, including wisdom, loyalty, chastity, strength and power, so perhaps it is not so surprising that the maker here branched out to include such a magnificent creature.Early redwork pieces, particularly of this size, are few and far between in institutions, but there are two notable examples which bear a strong resemblance to the piece offered here: a bedcover held by The Art Institute of Chicago (reference number 1986.988); and a bed curtain housed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (40.88a-f). Smaller pieces are held by the Royal School of Needlework, the Embroiderers' Guild, and the V&A.

A RARE LACQUER-GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF AN ARHAT, AYUTTHAYA PERIODThailand, 16th-17th century. Heavily cast seated in dhyanasana with his right hand lowered in bhumisparsa mudra and the left resting on his lap and holding a small vessel, wearing a monastic robe draped over the left shoulder, the serene face with heavy-lidded eyes below elegantly arched brows, flanked by long pendulous earlobes, the hair arranged in tight curls.Provenance: Collection of Peter Salomon. Peter Salomon (1942-2020) was a Danish designer who developed a passion for Asian art at a young age. He purchased his first Buddhist figure at the age of 12 with his own pocket money. Planning to sell antiques for a living, he traveled to London when he was 19 and purchased many objects around Portobello Road, which he found very hard to part with, however. In the end, Salomon pursued a different career path which was nonetheless inspired by his early passion, and began to design decorative objects himself, while his love for Asian and Buddhist art lasted his entire life.Condition: Good condition, as expected and commensurate with age, with wear and casting flaws, minor losses, small nicks, warping, dents, few structural cracks, extensive wear and flaking to lacquer gilding. Fine, naturally grown patina with a good, unctuous feel overall.Weight: 52.9 kg Dimensions: Height 67 cmThis rare bronze sculpture of an arhat depicts the monk seated in meditation with his right hand extending towards the ground to call on the Earth to bear witness to his enlightenment. An arhat in Theravada Buddhism, which predominates throughout Southeast Asia, represents the spiritual paradigm for ordinary beings to emulate. The highest spiritual goal for followers of Theravada Buddhism is to perfect Shakyamuni's teachings over many lifetimes, which results in becoming an arhat: an enlightened being freed from the cycle of rebirth (parinirvana).Paintings and sculptures of arhats frequent Thai temples. Their depiction largely imitates Buddha images, though without possessing certain key physical characteristics (lakshana) that distinguish Buddha as a supernatural being. As represented in this sculpture, these are the absence of an ushnisha and the orientation of the arhat's left hand. Rather than the back of the hand resting in his lap, it is turned frontally toward the viewer.Auction result comparison: Compare a related copper alloy figure of an arhat, 83 cm high, also dated 16th-17th century, at Bonhams New York in Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian Art on 23 September 2020, lot 638, sold for USD 47,575.

Spanish or Italian school; circa 1760-1770."Abraham, Sarah and the Angel".Oil on canvas. Re-framed.It does not conserve stretcher.Measurements: 21 x 31,5 cm; 28 x 38 cm (frame). The perspective with which this work has been conceived, with a high point of view, indicates that probably the piece was conceived to be placed in a superior zone, perhaps in a lintel. In the scene that takes place outside, the artist places only three protagonists arranged in a pyramidal composition that allows the piece to be easily read. In the upper area, an angel belonging to the celestial plane conveys a message to a couple, Abraham and Sarah. This scene from the Old Testament is found in Chapter 18 of Genesis, which reads: 18:9 And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Here in the tent. 18:10 And he said, I will surely return to thee; and according to the time of life, behold, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah listened at the door of the tent, which was behind him. 18:11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and advanced in years, and Sarah's custom of wives had ceased. 18:12 And Sarah laughed among herself, saying, After I am old, shall I have pleasure, when my lord also is old? 18:13 And the LORD said unto Abraham, Why hath Sarah laughed, saying, Shall I be delivered when I am old? 18:14 Is there any hard thing for God? At the appointed time I will return to you, and according to the time of life, Sarah shall bear a son. 18:15 And Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, It is not so, but thou hast laughed.

Extremely Rare British Made (Firmin & Sons) Confederate States of America Dolphin Head Naval Officers Dress Sword, the sword with deep brass dish guard with relief of the confederate naval insignia of anchor over crossed cannons in oval cartouche, cotton plants and tobacco leaves relief through the knuckle bow leading to the sea serpent / dolphin head pommel and back strap designed to look like scales. Fish skin covered grip with the original wire binding. The slightly curved steel blade is finely etched with foliage and the 2nd pattern confederate flag with anchor behind. Other side of the blade has etched foliage, cotton plants and tobacco leaves, centre with the insignia of the confederate navy. Blade forte with makers details, “FIRMIN & SONS 153 STRAND & 13 Conduct St LONDON”. The blade 76 ½ cms in length. Some surface staining. Evidence of polishing to the hilt but generally good example. No scabbard. Provenance: This sword was originally purchased in a market in Preston (Lancashire, North West, England) in 1938 and was kept by a collector since then until October 1990 when the sword was sold / traded with another collector, the late Jerry Withers, who in turn had kept the sword until his passing in December 2020. The sword, along with other items from Withers collection has been consigned to C&T Auctioneers and Valuers Ltd. Paperwork relating to the transaction for the sword is included with the lot. The Confederate "Dolphin Head" Naval Officer's Sword was based upon the English Pattern 1827 Lion's Head Naval Officer's Sword, and retained the solid guard with folding counter guard of the English sword pattern, but introduced new decorative motifs including the sea serpent pommel cap with scaled backstrap, as well as the Confederate naval blade and guard designs. The design of the sword has been attributed to George T. Sinclair of the Confederate Navy. The swords are encountered with two different retailer markings. The first were made by Robert Mole of Birmingham and bear the marks of Courtney & Tennent of Charleston, SC. The other variation is the Firmin retailer marked sword, whose maker (or makers) are not currently known. Both versions of the swords from the two retailers exhibit two variations in the blade etching, with the primary difference being in the presentation of the Confederate national flag. The two known Courtney & Tennent variations use the Confederate 1st National Flag with three wide horizontal stripes and a square canton. One version depicts 11 stars in a circle within the canton, the other version leaves the canton blank. The two previously known variations of the Firmin blade etching depict a 1st National Flag as well, but with a 13-star St. Andrews cross in the canton, with the difference in the etching being that one variation is frosted, while the other one is deeply etched without frosting. The 2nd National Flag was not adopted until May 1 of 1863, and it is generally believed that the production of the Dolphin Head swords did not commence until the end of 1862 or very early in 1863. At that time, the 1st National Flag was still in use. The appearance of a 2nd National Flag on this blade suggests that this sword was a later production item, likely not produced until the very end of 1863 or even during 1864. The Dolphin Head is one of the rarest American swords you could hope to find, with many serious advance collections not having an example.
