An interesting 19th century carved marine ivory diorama group, comprising an Eskimo family on sled pulled by reindeer, trees, a dog chasing a hare and a figure with a bear, all on a rectangular tiled and moulded base, on four carved feet, (some damages and losses), 28 x 19cm, 17cm high, contained in a mahogany glazed case, 31 x 22cm overall.

CHINA TRADE FIGURESGood group of seven signatures, one note and one letter, all executed by nineteenth century British and American traders and customs officials in China, includes: WILLIAM S. WETMORE (1801-1862), American merchant in Canton, trading in tea, silks and spices. A.L.S. "Wm. S. Wetmore", 1p. 4to., Middletown, May 20, 1816, to his grandfather, William Shepard. Wetmore thanks his grandfather for allowing him to board at his house, and relays some family news, including the death of his mother. He expects to see his grandfather again when he visits his father's import business. Also includes: WILLIAM CARTWRIGHT, Imperial customs inspector, A.N.S., 1p. 12mo., [n.p., n.d.], accepting the invitation of Mrs. Martin for dinner. The signatures, of which six are cut from letters and one is executed on a post card, include: THOMAS SUTHERLAND (1834-1922), founder of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation; EDWARD MCKEAN; F.E. WOODRUFF; COLIN JAMIESON; S.M. RUSSELL; CHARLES H. OLIVER; and EDWIN LIOT. Some signatures bear mounting remnants on the verso, else very good.
"CARTOONS ON U.S. IMPERIALIST AGGRESSION"Chinese softbound publication, "Cartoons on U.S. Imperialist Aggression", illustrated by Liu Tiantang and Shi Zuoli (Jinan: The Shandong People's Publishing House), 1951, 110pp. oblong 8vo., a collection of political cartoons decrying and vilifying western powers, primarily the United States. Prominently featured figures include Uncle Sam, Douglas MacArthur, and Mao Zedong and other Communist luminaries in heroic roles. the half-title page bears a stamp identifying the publication as the property of "The Women and Infants Health Committee of Yunnan Province, The Medical Workers' Union of Kunming City". The covers bear some chipping, and the publication is toned and soiled throughout, else very good. From a single collection obtained entirely in China pre-2000.
"TOBACCO GIRLS" PROMOTE THE CHINA HUA QING TOBACCO COMPANYGood group of four paper advertising scrolls, each 30 3/4" x 10 1/2", each depicting an elegant Chinese woman fashionably dressed in the fusion of Chinese and Western styles popular in the 1920's and 1930's. Each scroll bears the inscription in Chinese characters: "The Ching Hua Qing Tobacco Company" at the top, and: "Please Smoke Jin Xi Brand, Jin Ling Brand, and Jia Li Brand Cigarettes" at the bottom. Each scroll is reinforced by metal supports at the top and bottom edges, and bear silk hanging loops. Some chipping to the edges and expected toning, else very good.
RED GUARD ARMBANDSLot of four red cloth armbands, measuring between 3" x 6" (joined at the ends) and 6 1/2" x 18 1/2" (unjoined), with the smallest being a child's size. Each armband is printed with Chinese characters in white or yellow, and one bears an image of Mao Zedong. These were worn by the Red Guards, a mass paramilitary social movement, mostly comprised of students, who were mobilized by Mao during the Cultural Revolution to enforce the denouncement and erasure of pre-revolution Chinese culture with that of the Communist Party of China. All bear minor soiling, with one showing further faint ink inscriptions in Chinese and rubber stamps, else very good. From a single collection obtained entirely in China pre-2000.
PLAQUES HONORING MAO CAST OF METAL FROM DESTROYED ENEMY AIRCRAFTPair of metal plaques, one rectangular and the other in the shape of a star, measuring 9" x 5" and 5" dia., respectively. Both bear profile portraits of Mao Zedong, and the rectangular plaque is inscribed: "Sailing at Sea Needs Helmsman", above a scene with an island. The reverse of this plaque reads: "Souvenir of the war to resist U.S. aggression and aid Vietnam - Chinese Logistics Department, 1967", indicating that the metal used in its creation was taken from American planes shot down in Vietnam. The star-shaped plaque is unmarked. Both were once partially colored with red paint, which has now mostly disappeared. Some wear and soiling from age, else very good.
