Mary Alice Swan - daughter of John Macallan Swan and Mary Ann Rankin, a hand written and signed letter, a New Year's note with ink sketch of a finch and a smaller calling card signed note (3) We believe that the 'Lallie' referred to in the following is Helen Ionides, the daughter of Constantine Alexander IonidesThey read:Dec 4th, 3 Acacia Road St Johns Wood NW, Dear Lallie Many thanks for the lovely mandarin necklace, it is too good of you to give me such a treasure for my little collection and all the family admire them greatly. It is good to think the Chinese hand has not lost its cunning, for the work is truly beautiful. We are still living in twilight. I feel like the poor cock on the ship in the artic regions who was plugged by the perpetual darkness, he got so depressed by always crowing at he streak of dawn that never dawned, that he eventually flew into the sea to end his troubles, which sad ending I always think spoils the story. Father sends his love, so do we all, but father desires special mention. We yours affectionately Mary A Swan And:3 Acacia Road St Johns Wood NW, To Lallie May 1912 bring to you all joy and happiness. MAS (The letter is embellished with an ink sketch of a finch and highlighted with gilt)And:3 Acacia Road St johns Wood - Tuesday, Dear Miss Ionidies I hope your cold is now quite well and that you and your sister will at last be able to come to the zoo with us.
