A very large carved wood bear, Japan, 20th C. Dim.: 93 x 55 x 54 cm Condition: Very good. The Ainu are an ethnic group, distinct from the Japanese, that live today almost exclusively on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. They were traditionally hunters-gatherers and fishermen. They didn't practice rice farming like the Japanese. They hunted bear, sea otter, deer and other animals, gathered wild plants and fished for whales, seal lions, swordfish and salmon on the open seas until they were driven inland by the Japanese. UMAYYAD, YUSUF B. ‘UMAR AL-THAQAFI (d. 127h), Square lead seal, uniface, dated 123h. LEGEND: mimma al-amr bihi al-a- | mir Yusuf b. ‘Umar | ‘ala yadi Ishaq b. | Malik sanat | thalath wa ‘ashrin | wa mi’at. DIMENSIONS: 19mm square (approx.), 17.24g. CONDITION: Creased, probably when affixed as a seal, otherwise very fine and very rare. Yusuf b. ‘Umar al-Thaqafi was the cousin of al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf and became governor of Yemen in the year 105h. The caliph Hisham later appointed him to the governorship of Iraq in the year 120h, a position he held until 126h when he was deposed and imprisoned, dying in the following year. Walker quotes a statement by al-Maqrizi to the effect that…’in the year 120…Yusuf ibn ‘Umar al-Thaqafi succeeded…as governor. He decreased the [size of the] die and made them (the dirhams) circulate at the weight of six (danaks) and he minted them in Wasit alone until al-Walid ibn Yazid was killed in the year 126h.’ It is noteworthy that dirhams struck in Wasit from 120 onwards which bear five annulets on the obverse are indeed struck on smaller, thicker flans than earlier issues, and this five-annulet pattern is presumably associated with Yusuf’s governorship.
A Black Forest style carved wood hiker bear, holding a staff, 33 cm high, and another similar (2) Condition report Report by GH The bear with the staff is generally in good condition with some small cracks, chips and wear commensurate with age. The underside of the left paw has a drilled circular hole, as does the heel of the right foot. These suggest this bear may have originally been on a stand. The other bear is generally in reasonably good condition with some wear, but no obvious damage or repairs.
A Black Forest style carved wood inkwell, decorated an owl and owlets, 14 cm high, and a similar desktop barometer (2) Condition report Report by GH The owl and owlets have possibly been varnished. The barometer is generally in good condition, but the bear on the top is slightly loose, and there are a few small chips and dents, particularly to the foliage.

The musical box is slightly temperamental and needs some work, but is functioning. The left hand top compartment is broken off at the hinge, which has damaged the wood on the back part. There is also cracking to the top on the left along the grain of the wood. There is also some sun-fading at the top. The tree and the bear below are generally in better condition, however there are some scratches and nicks, particularly to the tripod feet which are also very slightly loose.
An early 20th century Black Forest style carved wood bear stand, each arm holding a platter, 94 cm high See illustration Condition report Report by GH Occasional individual woodworm holes on the base. Some splitting down the grain of the wood to the body of the bear. One of the glass eyes is cracked but both are present. An early 20th century Black Forest style carved wood bear stick stand, 85 cm high See illustration Condition report Report by GH Little or no evidence of any woodworm. Some splitting down the grain of the wood, specifically near one elbow of the bear, and some very minor splits down the back. An early 20th century Black Forest carved wood standing bear (probably a stick stand originally), 84 cm high See illustration Condition report Report by GH Has possibly been applied a coat of varnish at some point. There is a chip to the tongue, and some chips around the base. Some of the varnish is also cracking and lifting. Around the back there is a secret compartment of approx. 10 x 25 cm, and there are a couple of vertical cracks to the wood extending from the top and the bottom of this compartment. When viewed from beneath, it is apparent that this figure has been converted from a stick stand as there are two holes beneath the paws. There are also a few wood worm holes, particularly on the top of the paws. Other occasional cracks, chips and scratches. The base is almost certainly not original, and appears in a slightly different shade to the rest of the piece
A 20th century Black Forest style carved wood standing bear, holding a bowl with leaves, probably repainted, 91 cm high See illustration Condition report Report by GH The left arm has a large crack near the joint.
